DAY 1 OF 5

The Loneliness Epidemic is Nothing New

In the beginning there was community. John tells us that from the very start of all eternity, there was the Word, and the Word was with God. (John 1:1). When God created the world, the only thing that was not good was man being alone. He created a partner, a friend in Eve, and He said their community was very good.

Loneliness hurts because God created us for community. Connection is in our design.

As you work through your feelings of loneliness, keep in mind that your desire for connection is no small matter. In this study, we will see how loneliness only became a reality after sin entered the world.

When God confronted Adam and Eve about their sin, Adam immediately blamed his wife. He drove a small wedge between him and the same partner who God designed for him. For the first time since Eve’s creation, he separated himself from her. Community broke. The relationship fractured. Connection was lost.

Loneliness is a product of the fall, a result of sin, so only the Lord can save us from it. Throughout this study, we will see ways in which He does just that. We will look at how God restores all of creation back to its original design: a perfect unity in all things, in all people, in all relationships.

As you read the scriptures for today, notice two things specifically:

1. Loneliness was not part of God’s design.

2. Sin brought loneliness with it.

These realities should fuel worship and encouragement. We know that God defeats sin, and with it, He defeats loneliness as well. Take a second to thank God for His ability to restore all things back to His original design. Praise Him for making a way for us to defeat loneliness both in this life and in the one to come.
