Things That Only Jesus Can Give You

DAY 4 OF 7

Only Jesus can make you a real worshiper

“But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the

true worshippers will worship the Father in

spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking

such people to worship him.”

One of the most well-known conversations in the life of Jesus is his interaction with the Samaritan woman in John 4. In the context of that conversation, Jesus makes what is perhaps the

most profound statement on worship in the Bible.

First of all, the sovereign, infinite, holy God of the universe is seeking worshippers. He doesn’t need worshippers, but he wants them. He wants them because worshippers of God are lovers of God, and God yearns for us to love him back.

Lots of people are workers for God. Fewer people are worshippers of God. Worshippers are lovers, and God is looking for worshippers.

Second, we must worship God in spirit. That is, we must worship from our hearts. If we go through the motions of worship or mouth the words of praise, but our heart is not in it, then the worship means nothing. In fact, it’s not even worship. It’s religious ritual. Worship in spirit—from your heart, with all your heart, with heartfelt sincerity and passion.

Third, we must worship God in truth. That is, worship God according to who he is and what he has commanded. We find out who God is and what he has commanded in the Bible. The Bible is crucial if we are going to worship God in truth.

If we worship with spirit but without truth, we have enthusiastic heresy. If we worship with truth but without spirit, we have dead orthodoxy. God is longing for worshippers who have both spirit and truth. Indeed, God delights in this kind of worshipper. He’s seeking them.

Can he count you in?
