The Five Principles For Christian Global Leaders

DAY 3 OF 5

DISCIPLINE

Any goal or objective we want to reach as a leader requires discipline. This is particularly true of anything that has eternal significance.

Someone who is disciplined is someone who has the ability to train himself to do something in a controlled and habitual way. In 1 Corinthians 9:24-27, Paul uses the example of an Olympic runner. Think of the tremendous amount of discipline that it must take, not only to participate as such an athlete, but to be an athlete that wins the prize! Since we already know that Christian leadership does play a massive role in terms of eternal significance we should share the same mindset of the Olympic runner.

Notice some of the wording of 1 Corinthians 9:24-27. The one who is not disciplined is one who is without self-control. He runs aimlessly, and “beats the air.”

The old saying, “if you fail to plan, then you plan to fail” speaks to the necessity to be disciplined. We should not be deceived into thinking that if God has called us to something that it will not take a tremendous effort on our part. Colossians 3:23 clearly speaks against this sort of thinking, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.”

A Christian leader also should not think that just because he possesses a great zeal and passion his plans and goals will automatically be reached. Charisma and enthusiasm can only go so far. We must join discipline with our calling and zeal if we want to lead in such a way that meets God’s purpose for our teams and organizations.

A disciplined Christian leader can clearly communicate the purpose of an organization, what is needed to reach the mission and vision of the organization, and lead in such a way that meets those needs. Does this describe your own leadership? Are you the type of leader that seeks to be disciplined because you understand that leading others requires discipline?
