The Prayers Of Jesus: A 5-Day DevotionalSample
Jesus Prayed the Lord's Prayer
In the Gospels, the disciples never request instruction on preaching from their Master, but they do ask him to teach them how to pray. We must not think that the disciples knew nothing about prayer. In actual fact, set forms of prayer often identified formal religious groups in biblical times, such as John the Baptist and his disciples (Luke 11:1). So, by asking Jesus “how to pray,” they were possibly asking for a specific form of prayer to distinguish them from others. Jesus offers a prayer that incorporates a whole body of divinity and provides fundamental teachings he gives as the prophesied Prophet (Deut. 18:18).
It is hard to overstate the significance of the Lord’s Prayer in the life of the church. The prayer was meant for full members of the church, not pagans. This breathtaking prayer must flow from the lips of the godly, not only in the actual words but also with its larger intended meaning, which therefore allows for other words not explicitly found in it.
