Whose Church Is It?Sample
Christ is the Owner and Head of the Church
Confusion about who owns the church and who should be in charge is crippling some churches in America, where many congregations have reached plateaus, and many have begun a decline, largely because their democratic approach to doing church stifles their impact. This can sidetrack the church from its eternal purpose and, consequently, choke the flow of God’s power for relevant ministries.
The key to turning our churches right side up is to:
recognize Christ as the Owner and Head of the Church,
embrace the biblical flow of authority through His ministry officers along with their gifts,
and put into practice the priesthood of believers.
We say we believe Christ is Head, but we jockey for power positions. We trust Him with Eternity, but we want to be in charge until we get there. We say we believe in equipping the saints for ministry, but we relegate the bulk of the work to paid professionals. We believe Christ’s death opened the way for us all to call on God, but we rely mostly on the preacher for prayer and intercession.
Becoming a healthy church means getting back to God’s pattern. This pattern is given to us in the New Testament, and it releases us, the people of the church, into relevant ministry. This process also unleashes God’s power to enable and confirm our efforts. In many instances, good men and women fail to flow in God’s purpose because they do not know their roles in God’s process.
When we come to understand the truth about Christ’s authority, we can shift from our attitudes of keeping the pastor accountable, to a heart of service for God’s purpose. The practical biblical principles and patterns studied in this devotional will help you find hope and real help to be a part of The Church That Works!
