Adonai: Owner Of AllSample
Ceding ownership of our lives to Adonai means the death of all other “lords” in our lives.
The prophet Isaiah was granted a magnificent, humbling vision of Adonai “sitting on a throne, lofty and exalted, with the train of his robe filling the temple” (Isaiah 6:1). This vision, however, came to him in the year of King Uzziah’s death. Uzziah was one of the great kings of Judah, a king whose fame extended to the border of Egypt (2 Chronicles 26:8). Yet, Uzziah’s fame and power led ultimately to his downfall:
“But when he became strong, his heart was so proud that he acted corruptly, and he was unfaithful to the Lord his God” (2 Chronicles 26:16).
God struck down Uzziah with leprosy, and he ended his days cut off from the house of the Lord (2 Chronicles 26:21). Isaiah saw the downfall and death of one who appeared to be “master of his fate; captain of his soul.” As a result, this fundamentally flawed ethic for life gave way to a vision of Adonai (Isaiah 6:1) as the One truly seated on the throne, the only Lord of the universe to whom the angels cry out:
“Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of hosts, the whole earth is full of His glory” (Isaiah 6:3).
We cannot come to Adonai holding on to other lords and masters, whether they are people or possessions; Adonai demands complete Lordship.
I want to remind you that the good news about ceding ownership of our lives to Adonai is that He, like any good owner, becomes responsible for what He owns. We become free as we come to know that everything we have is on loan from Adonai. We must remember that the God we know is the only real “Master of our fate,” the only “Captain of our soul.” We must remember that His name is Adonai.
