John, writing well after the Synoptics (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) have been written, will "fill in the details" by giving us miracles that don't appear elsewhere, namely the Wedding at Cana and the Resurrection of Lazarus. John's miracles have a theological purpose, as well. Peter's miracle telling is like a wild west shoot up. John's is calculated. The first miracle is the Water to Wine, foretelling Christ's death. The miracle of Lazarus Resurrection is foretelling of both Jesus's Resurrection and our eventual Resurrection. The persecuted churches John will be writing to comfort need to understand that there is life beyond life. The Book of John will bring about a theological shift in the Church in that they will focus completely on the Resurrection. It is likely that, because of this book, the Early Church focused completely on the Resurrection in its teaching, and not exclusively on the Cross.
