Lent Through African EyesSample
The First Sunday of Lent
Since every Sunday celebrates the resurrection, Sundays are not included in the fasting of Lent. We change the pace slightly on Sundays in this devotional, offering slightly longer scripture readings with less commentary.
The Psalmist reflects on how during 40 years in the wilderness, Israel put God to the test and constantly sinned. Yet God continually rescued His people—including through sending Jesus. During His 40 days in the wilderness, Jesus refused to put God to the test. He was the true obedient Israel.
Pray this Psalm with the Psalmist. Admit how you continually sin and need God to save you. Then thank God that He has saved us through Jesus.

About this Plan
Africans throughout history have shaped Christian thought and contemplative practice. Starting Ash Wednesday, explore the Lenten themes of prayer, fasting, repentance, and alms-giving. Sojourn with Jesus’ disciples from his baptism to Holy Week. Abide with him in temptation. Hear the crowd shout—celebrating, then condemning. Watch Simon of Cyrene carry the cross. Witness the crucifixion with Mary. Join a biblical pilgrimage to prepare your heart for Jesus’ passion and resurrection.
