2 Timothy: Guard The GospelSample

2 Timothy: Guard The Gospel

DAY 3 OF 30

Timothy has a teaching gift. He has been set apart for church leadership by Paul and the other elders in Ephesus (1 Tim. 4:13–14). But if he doesn’t use his gift, it will die. Just as an untended fire will burn out and die, if a gift isn’t cultivated and practised, it will become lifeless and ineffective. It’s not enough for Timothy to know he has a teaching gift; he must use it.

This is especially important as Paul approaches the end of his life. As the apostolic age ends, the next generation of gospel ministers must be ready to continue spreading the gospel and teaching the church. Timothy must use his gift to build up the church, guard her from false teaching and advance the gospel.

Paul knows this is daunting. He understands the discouragement and opposition gospel ministers face. So he reminds Timothy that God has given his Holy Spirit to equip and empower him for ministry. He tells Timothy this gift of the Holy Spirit should keep him from being fearful. Instead he can have courage to proclaim the truth boldly, even if it is rejected or received with anger. Timothy can teach with confidence in the Holy Spirit’s power to make his ministry effective and fruitful.

The Holy Spirit equips all believers with power, love and self-discipline. He gives power – so our gospel efforts can be courageous and fruitful despite our weaknesses and fears. He gives love – for unbelievers who need to hear the gospel and for the church, so we are motivated to serve willingly and sacrificially. He gives self-discipline – so we can use our gifts effectively. Preachers and church leaders need this discipline so they can work hard with integrity – especially because much of their work is unseen by others. All of us need this discipline – because we are tempted towards laziness, self-indulgence and comfortable living. Praise God for his Holy Spirit, who equips us with all we need!

Reflection

Thank God for his gift of the Holy Spirit. Pray for your church leaders to know the Spirit’s power, love and self-discipline, equipping them for ministry and guarding them from fear. Pray for the Holy Spirit to give you courage, love and discipline so you can serve God effectively in the ways he has called you to.

About this Plan

2 Timothy: Guard The Gospel

In prison, chained like a criminal and awaiting his execution, Paul writes his final letter to his beloved spiritual son, Timothy. Knowing that his life may soon be over, Paul takes the opportunity to pass on gospel truth to the next generation. He exhorts Timothy to carry on faithfully preaching the gospel and encourages him to stick to the truth despite the suffering that will inevitably come his way.
