 <div class="label">9</div><div class="s1">Jehu Anointed King of Israel</div><div class="p"> 1The prophet Elisha summoned a man from the company of the prophets and said to him, &#8220;Tuck your cloak into your belt, take this flask of olive oil with you and go to Ramoth Gilead. 2When you get there, look for Jehu son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi. Go to him, get him away from his companions and take him into an inner room. 3Then take the flask and pour the oil on his head and declare, &#8216;This is what the Lord says: I anoint you king over Israel.&#8217; Then open the door and run; don&#8217;t delay!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 4So the young prophet went to Ramoth Gilead. 5When he arrived, he found the army officers sitting together. &#8220;I have a message for you, commander,&#8221; he said.</div><div class="p">&#8220;For which of us?&#8221; asked Jehu.</div><div class="p">&#8220;For you, commander,&#8221; he replied.</div><div class="p"> 6Jehu got up and went into the house. Then the prophet poured the oil on Jehu&#8217;s head and declared, &#8220;This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: &#8216;I anoint you king over the Lord&#8217;s people Israel. 7You are to destroy the house of Ahab your master, and I will avenge the blood of my servants the prophets and the blood of all the Lord&#8217;s servants shed by Jezebel. 8The whole house of Ahab will perish. I will cut off from Ahab every last male in Israel&#8212;slave or free.#9:8 Or Israel&#8212;every ruler or leader 9I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam son of Nebat and like the house of Baasha son of Ahijah. 10As for Jezebel, dogs will devour her on the plot of ground at Jezreel, and no one will bury her.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221; Then he opened the door and ran.</div><div class="p"> 11When Jehu went out to his fellow officers, one of them asked him, &#8220;Is everything all right? Why did this maniac come to you?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;You know the man and the sort of things he says,&#8221; Jehu replied.</div><div class="p"> 12&#8220;That&#8217;s not true!&#8221; they said. &#8220;Tell us.&#8221;</div><div class="p">Jehu said, &#8220;Here is what he told me: &#8216;This is what the Lord says: I anoint you king over Israel.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 13They quickly took their cloaks and spread them under him on the bare steps. Then they blew the trumpet and shouted, &#8220;Jehu is king!&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Jehu Kills Joram and Ahaziah</div><div class="p"> 14So Jehu son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi, conspired against Joram. (Now Joram and all Israel had been defending Ramoth Gilead against Hazael king of Aram, 15but King Joram#9:15 Hebrew Jehoram, a variant of Joram; also in verses 17 and 21-24 had returned to Jezreel to recover from the wounds the Arameans had inflicted on him in the battle with Hazael king of Aram.) Jehu said, &#8220;If you desire to make me king, don&#8217;t let anyone slip out of the city to go and tell the news in Jezreel.&#8221; 16Then he got into his chariot and rode to Jezreel, because Joram was resting there and Ahaziah king of Judah had gone down to see him.</div><div class="p"> 17When the lookout standing on the tower in Jezreel saw Jehu&#8217;s troops approaching, he called out, &#8220;I see some troops coming.&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;Get a horseman,&#8221; Joram ordered. &#8220;Send him to meet them and ask, &#8216;Do you come in peace?&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 18The horseman rode off to meet Jehu and said, &#8220;This is what the king says: &#8216;Do you come in peace?&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;What do you have to do with peace?&#8221; Jehu replied. &#8220;Fall in behind me.&#8221;</div><div class="p">The lookout reported, &#8220;The messenger has reached them, but he isn&#8217;t coming back.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 19So the king sent out a second horseman. When he came to them he said, &#8220;This is what the king says: &#8216;Do you come in peace?&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p">Jehu replied, &#8220;What do you have to do with peace? Fall in behind me.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 20The lookout reported, &#8220;He has reached them, but he isn&#8217;t coming back either. The driving is like that of Jehu son of Nimshi&#8212;he drives like a maniac.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 21&#8220;Hitch up my chariot,&#8221; Joram ordered. And when it was hitched up, Joram king of Israel and Ahaziah king of Judah rode out, each in his own chariot, to meet Jehu. They met him at the plot of ground that had belonged to Naboth the Jezreelite. 22When Joram saw Jehu he asked, &#8220;Have you come in peace, Jehu?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;How can there be peace,&#8221; Jehu replied, &#8220;as long as all the idolatry and witchcraft of your mother Jezebel abound?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 23Joram turned about and fled, calling out to Ahaziah, &#8220;Treachery, Ahaziah!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 24Then Jehu drew his bow and shot Joram between the shoulders. The arrow pierced his heart and he slumped down in his chariot. 25Jehu said to Bidkar, his chariot officer, &#8220;Pick him up and throw him on the field that belonged to Naboth the Jezreelite. Remember how you and I were riding together in chariots behind Ahab his father when the Lord spoke this prophecy against him: 26&#8216;Yesterday I saw the blood of Naboth and the blood of his sons, declares the Lord, and I will surely make you pay for it on this plot of ground, declares the Lord.&#8217;#9:26 See 1 Kings 21:19. Now then, pick him up and throw him on that plot, in accordance with the word of the Lord.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 27When Ahaziah king of Judah saw what had happened, he fled up the road to Beth Haggan.#9:27 Or fled by way of the garden house Jehu chased him, shouting, &#8220;Kill him too!&#8221; They wounded him in his chariot on the way up to Gur near Ibleam, but he escaped to Megiddo and died there. 28His servants took him by chariot to Jerusalem and buried him with his ancestors in his tomb in the City of David. 29(In the eleventh year of Joram son of Ahab, Ahaziah had become king of Judah.)</div><div class="s1">Jezebel Killed</div><div class="p"> 30Then Jehu went to Jezreel. When Jezebel heard about it, she put on eye makeup, arranged her hair and looked out of a window. 31As Jehu entered the gate, she asked, &#8220;Have you come in peace, you Zimri, you murderer of your master?&#8221;#9:31 Or &#8220;Was there peace for Zimri, who murdered his master?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 32He looked up at the window and called out, &#8220;Who is on my side? Who?&#8221; Two or three eunuchs looked down at him. 33&#8220;Throw her down!&#8221; Jehu said. So they threw her down, and some of her blood spattered the wall and the horses as they trampled her underfoot.</div><div class="p"> 34Jehu went in and ate and drank. &#8220;Take care of that cursed woman,&#8221; he said, &#8220;and bury her, for she was a king&#8217;s daughter.&#8221; 35But when they went out to bury her, they found nothing except her skull, her feet and her hands. 36They went back and told Jehu, who said, &#8220;This is the word of the Lord that he spoke through his servant Elijah the Tishbite: On the plot of ground at Jezreel dogs will devour Jezebel&#8217;s flesh.#9:36 See 1 Kings 21:23. 37Jezebel&#8217;s body will be like dung on the ground in the plot at Jezreel, so that no one will be able to say, &#8216;This is Jezebel.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">10</div><div class="s1">Ahab&#8217;s Family Killed</div><div class="p"> 1Now there were in Samaria seventy sons of the house of Ahab. So Jehu wrote letters and sent them to Samaria: to the officials of Jezreel,#10:1 Hebrew; some Septuagint manuscripts and Vulgate of the city to the elders and to the guardians of Ahab&#8217;s children. He said, 2&#8220;You have your master&#8217;s sons with you and you have chariots and horses, a fortified city and weapons. Now as soon as this letter reaches you, 3choose the best and most worthy of your master&#8217;s sons and set him on his father&#8217;s throne. Then fight for your master&#8217;s house.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 4But they were terrified and said, &#8220;If two kings could not resist him, how can we?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 5So the palace administrator, the city governor, the elders and the guardians sent this message to Jehu: &#8220;We are your servants and we will do anything you say. We will not appoint anyone as king; you do whatever you think best.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 6Then Jehu wrote them a second letter, saying, &#8220;If you are on my side and will obey me, take the heads of your master&#8217;s sons and come to me in Jezreel by this time tomorrow.&#8221;</div><div class="p">Now the royal princes, seventy of them, were with the leading men of the city, who were rearing them. 7When the letter arrived, these men took the princes and slaughtered all seventy of them. They put their heads in baskets and sent them to Jehu in Jezreel. 8When the messenger arrived, he told Jehu, &#8220;They have brought the heads of the princes.&#8221;</div><div class="p">Then Jehu ordered, &#8220;Put them in two piles at the entrance of the city gate until morning.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 9The next morning Jehu went out. He stood before all the people and said, &#8220;You are innocent. It was I who conspired against my master and killed him, but who killed all these? 10Know, then, that not a word the Lord has spoken against the house of Ahab will fail. The Lord has done what he announced through his servant Elijah.&#8221; 11So Jehu killed everyone in Jezreel who remained of the house of Ahab, as well as all his chief men, his close friends and his priests, leaving him no survivor.</div><div class="p"> 12Jehu then set out and went toward Samaria. At Beth Eked of the Shepherds, 13he met some relatives of Ahaziah king of Judah and asked, &#8220;Who are you?&#8221;</div><div class="p">They said, &#8220;We are relatives of Ahaziah, and we have come down to greet the families of the king and of the queen mother.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 14&#8220;Take them alive!&#8221; he ordered. So they took them alive and slaughtered them by the well of Beth Eked&#8212;forty-two of them. He left no survivor.</div><div class="p"> 15After he left there, he came upon Jehonadab son of Rekab, who was on his way to meet him. Jehu greeted him and said, &#8220;Are you in accord with me, as I am with you?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;I am,&#8221; Jehonadab answered.</div><div class="p">&#8220;If so,&#8221; said Jehu, &#8220;give me your hand.&#8221; So he did, and Jehu helped him up into the chariot. 16Jehu said, &#8220;Come with me and see my zeal for the Lord.&#8221; Then he had him ride along in his chariot.</div><div class="p"> 17When Jehu came to Samaria, he killed all who were left there of Ahab&#8217;s family; he destroyed them, according to the word of the Lord spoken to Elijah.</div><div class="s1">Servants of Baal Killed</div><div class="p"> 18Then Jehu brought all the people together and said to them, &#8220;Ahab served Baal a little; Jehu will serve him much. 19Now summon all the prophets of Baal, all his servants and all his priests. See that no one is missing, because I am going to hold a great sacrifice for Baal. Anyone who fails to come will no longer live.&#8221; But Jehu was acting deceptively in order to destroy the servants of Baal.</div><div class="p"> 20Jehu said, &#8220;Call an assembly in honor of Baal.&#8221; So they proclaimed it. 21Then he sent word throughout Israel, and all the servants of Baal came; not one stayed away. They crowded into the temple of Baal until it was full from one end to the other. 22And Jehu said to the keeper of the wardrobe, &#8220;Bring robes for all the servants of Baal.&#8221; So he brought out robes for them.</div><div class="p"> 23Then Jehu and Jehonadab son of Rekab went into the temple of Baal. Jehu said to the servants of Baal, &#8220;Look around and see that no one who serves the Lord is here with you&#8212;only servants of Baal.&#8221; 24So they went in to make sacrifices and burnt offerings. Now Jehu had posted eighty men outside with this warning: &#8220;If one of you lets any of the men I am placing in your hands escape, it will be your life for his life.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 25As soon as Jehu had finished making the burnt offering, he ordered the guards and officers: &#8220;Go in and kill them; let no one escape.&#8221; So they cut them down with the sword. The guards and officers threw the bodies out and then entered the inner shrine of the temple of Baal. 26They brought the sacred stone out of the temple of Baal and burned it. 27They demolished the sacred stone of Baal and tore down the temple of Baal, and people have used it for a latrine to this day.</div><div class="p"> 28So Jehu destroyed Baal worship in Israel. 29However, he did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit&#8212;the worship of the golden calves at Bethel and Dan.</div><div class="p"> 30The Lord said to Jehu, &#8220;Because you have done well in accomplishing what is right in my eyes and have done to the house of Ahab all I had in mind to do, your descendants will sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation.&#8221; 31Yet Jehu was not careful to keep the law of the Lord, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam, which he had caused Israel to commit.</div><div class="p"> 32In those days the Lord began to reduce the size of Israel. Hazael overpowered the Israelites throughout their territory 33east of the Jordan in all the land of Gilead (the region of Gad, Reuben and Manasseh), from Aroer by the Arnon Gorge through Gilead to Bashan.</div><div class="p"> 34As for the other events of Jehu&#8217;s reign, all he did, and all his achievements, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel?</div><div class="p"> 35Jehu rested with his ancestors and was buried in Samaria. And Jehoahaz his son succeeded him as king. 36The time that Jehu reigned over Israel in Samaria was twenty-eight years.</div>

 <div class="label">11</div><div class="s1">Athaliah and Joash</div><div class="p"> 1When Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she proceeded to destroy the whole royal family. 2But Jehosheba, the daughter of King Jehoram#11:2 Hebrew Joram, a variant of Jehoram and sister of Ahaziah, took Joash son of Ahaziah and stole him away from among the royal princes, who were about to be murdered. She put him and his nurse in a bedroom to hide him from Athaliah; so he was not killed. 3He remained hidden with his nurse at the temple of the Lord for six years while Athaliah ruled the land.</div><div class="p"> 4In the seventh year Jehoiada sent for the commanders of units of a hundred, the Carites and the guards and had them brought to him at the temple of the Lord. He made a covenant with them and put them under oath at the temple of the Lord. Then he showed them the king&#8217;s son. 5He commanded them, saying, &#8220;This is what you are to do: You who are in the three companies that are going on duty on the Sabbath&#8212;a third of you guarding the royal palace, 6a third at the Sur Gate, and a third at the gate behind the guard, who take turns guarding the temple&#8212; 7and you who are in the other two companies that normally go off Sabbath duty are all to guard the temple for the king. 8Station yourselves around the king, each of you with weapon in hand. Anyone who approaches your ranks#11:8 Or approaches the precincts is to be put to death. Stay close to the king wherever he goes.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 9The commanders of units of a hundred did just as Jehoiada the priest ordered. Each one took his men&#8212;those who were going on duty on the Sabbath and those who were going off duty&#8212;and came to Jehoiada the priest. 10Then he gave the commanders the spears and shields that had belonged to King David and that were in the temple of the Lord. 11The guards, each with weapon in hand, stationed themselves around the king&#8212;near the altar and the temple, from the south side to the north side of the temple.</div><div class="p"> 12Jehoiada brought out the king&#8217;s son and put the crown on him; he presented him with a copy of the covenant and proclaimed him king. They anointed him, and the people clapped their hands and shouted, &#8220;Long live the king!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 13When Athaliah heard the noise made by the guards and the people, she went to the people at the temple of the Lord. 14She looked and there was the king, standing by the pillar, as the custom was. The officers and the trumpeters were beside the king, and all the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets. Then Athaliah tore her robes and called out, &#8220;Treason! Treason!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 15Jehoiada the priest ordered the commanders of units of a hundred, who were in charge of the troops: &#8220;Bring her out between the ranks#11:15 Or out from the precincts and put to the sword anyone who follows her.&#8221; For the priest had said, &#8220;She must not be put to death in the temple of the Lord.&#8221; 16So they seized her as she reached the place where the horses enter the palace grounds, and there she was put to death.</div><div class="p"> 17Jehoiada then made a covenant between the Lord and the king and people that they would be the Lord&#8217;s people. He also made a covenant between the king and the people. 18All the people of the land went to the temple of Baal and tore it down. They smashed the altars and idols to pieces and killed Mattan the priest of Baal in front of the altars.</div><div class="p">Then Jehoiada the priest posted guards at the temple of the Lord. 19He took with him the commanders of hundreds, the Carites, the guards and all the people of the land, and together they brought the king down from the temple of the Lord and went into the palace, entering by way of the gate of the guards. The king then took his place on the royal throne. 20All the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was calm, because Athaliah had been slain with the sword at the palace.</div><div class="p"> 21Joash#11:21 Hebrew Jehoash, a variant of Joash was seven years old when he began to reign.#11:21 In Hebrew texts this verse (11:21) is numbered 12:1.</div>

 <div class="label">12</div><div class="s1">Joash Repairs the Temple</div><div class="p"> # In Hebrew texts 12:1-21 is numbered 12:2-22 1In the seventh year of Jehu, Joash#12:1 Hebrew Jehoash, a variant of Joash; also in verses 2, 4, 6, 7 and 18 became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem forty years. His mother&#8217;s name was Zibiah; she was from Beersheba. 2Joash did what was right in the eyes of the Lord all the years Jehoiada the priest instructed him. 3The high places, however, were not removed; the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there.</div><div class="p"> 4Joash said to the priests, &#8220;Collect all the money that is brought as sacred offerings to the temple of the Lord&#8212;the money collected in the census, the money received from personal vows and the money brought voluntarily to the temple. 5Let every priest receive the money from one of the treasurers, then use it to repair whatever damage is found in the temple.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 6But by the twenty-third year of King Joash the priests still had not repaired the temple. 7Therefore King Joash summoned Jehoiada the priest and the other priests and asked them, &#8220;Why aren&#8217;t you repairing the damage done to the temple? Take no more money from your treasurers, but hand it over for repairing the temple.&#8221; 8The priests agreed that they would not collect any more money from the people and that they would not repair the temple themselves.</div><div class="p"> 9Jehoiada the priest took a chest and bored a hole in its lid. He placed it beside the altar, on the right side as one enters the temple of the Lord. The priests who guarded the entrance put into the chest all the money that was brought to the temple of the Lord. 10Whenever they saw that there was a large amount of money in the chest, the royal secretary and the high priest came, counted the money that had been brought into the temple of the Lord and put it into bags. 11When the amount had been determined, they gave the money to the men appointed to supervise the work on the temple. With it they paid those who worked on the temple of the Lord&#8212;the carpenters and builders, 12the masons and stonecutters. They purchased timber and blocks of dressed stone for the repair of the temple of the Lord, and met all the other expenses of restoring the temple.</div><div class="p"> 13The money brought into the temple was not spent for making silver basins, wick trimmers, sprinkling bowls, trumpets or any other articles of gold or silver for the temple of the Lord; 14it was paid to the workers, who used it to repair the temple. 15They did not require an accounting from those to whom they gave the money to pay the workers, because they acted with complete honesty. 16The money from the guilt offerings and sin offerings#12:16 Or purification offerings was not brought into the temple of the Lord; it belonged to the priests.</div><div class="p"> 17About this time Hazael king of Aram went up and attacked Gath and captured it. Then he turned to attack Jerusalem. 18But Joash king of Judah took all the sacred objects dedicated by his predecessors&#8212;Jehoshaphat, Jehoram and Ahaziah, the kings of Judah&#8212;and the gifts he himself had dedicated and all the gold found in the treasuries of the temple of the Lord and of the royal palace, and he sent them to Hazael king of Aram, who then withdrew from Jerusalem.</div><div class="p"> 19As for the other events of the reign of Joash, and all he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? 20His officials conspired against him and assassinated him at Beth Millo, on the road down to Silla. 21The officials who murdered him were Jozabad son of Shimeath and Jehozabad son of Shomer. He died and was buried with his ancestors in the City of David. And Amaziah his son succeeded him as king.</div>

 <div class="label">13</div><div class="s1">Jehoahaz King of Israel</div><div class="p"> 1In the twenty-third year of Joash son of Ahaziah king of Judah, Jehoahaz son of Jehu became king of Israel in Samaria, and he reigned seventeen years. 2He did evil in the eyes of the Lord by following the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit, and he did not turn away from them. 3So the Lord&#8217;s anger burned against Israel, and for a long time he kept them under the power of Hazael king of Aram and Ben-Hadad his son.</div><div class="p"> 4Then Jehoahaz sought the Lord&#8217;s favor, and the Lord listened to him, for he saw how severely the king of Aram was oppressing Israel. 5The Lord provided a deliverer for Israel, and they escaped from the power of Aram. So the Israelites lived in their own homes as they had before. 6But they did not turn away from the sins of the house of Jeroboam, which he had caused Israel to commit; they continued in them. Also, the Asherah pole#13:6 That is, a wooden symbol of the goddess Asherah; here and elsewhere in 2 Kings remained standing in Samaria.</div><div class="p"> 7Nothing had been left of the army of Jehoahaz except fifty horsemen, ten chariots and ten thousand foot soldiers, for the king of Aram had destroyed the rest and made them like the dust at threshing time.</div><div class="p"> 8As for the other events of the reign of Jehoahaz, all he did and his achievements, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel? 9Jehoahaz rested with his ancestors and was buried in Samaria. And Jehoash#13:9 Hebrew Joash, a variant of Jehoash; also in verses 12-14 and 25 his son succeeded him as king.</div><div class="s1">Jehoash King of Israel</div><div class="p"> 10In the thirty-seventh year of Joash king of Judah, Jehoash son of Jehoahaz became king of Israel in Samaria, and he reigned sixteen years. 11He did evil in the eyes of the Lord and did not turn away from any of the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit; he continued in them.</div><div class="p"> 12As for the other events of the reign of Jehoash, all he did and his achievements, including his war against Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel? 13Jehoash rested with his ancestors, and Jeroboam succeeded him on the throne. Jehoash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.</div><div class="p"> 14Now Elisha had been suffering from the illness from which he died. Jehoash king of Israel went down to see him and wept over him. &#8220;My father! My father!&#8221; he cried. &#8220;The chariots and horsemen of Israel!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 15Elisha said, &#8220;Get a bow and some arrows,&#8221; and he did so. 16&#8220;Take the bow in your hands,&#8221; he said to the king of Israel. When he had taken it, Elisha put his hands on the king&#8217;s hands.</div><div class="p"> 17&#8220;Open the east window,&#8221; he said, and he opened it. &#8220;Shoot!&#8221; Elisha said, and he shot. &#8220;The Lord&#8217;s arrow of victory, the arrow of victory over Aram!&#8221; Elisha declared. &#8220;You will completely destroy the Arameans at Aphek.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 18Then he said, &#8220;Take the arrows,&#8221; and the king took them. Elisha told him, &#8220;Strike the ground.&#8221; He struck it three times and stopped. 19The man of God was angry with him and said, &#8220;You should have struck the ground five or six times; then you would have defeated Aram and completely destroyed it. But now you will defeat it only three times.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 20Elisha died and was buried.</div><div class="p">Now Moabite raiders used to enter the country every spring. 21Once while some Israelites were burying a man, suddenly they saw a band of raiders; so they threw the man&#8217;s body into Elisha&#8217;s tomb. When the body touched Elisha&#8217;s bones, the man came to life and stood up on his feet.</div><div class="p"> 22Hazael king of Aram oppressed Israel throughout the reign of Jehoahaz. 23But the Lord was gracious to them and had compassion and showed concern for them because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. To this day he has been unwilling to destroy them or banish them from his presence.</div><div class="p"> 24Hazael king of Aram died, and Ben-Hadad his son succeeded him as king. 25Then Jehoash son of Jehoahaz recaptured from Ben-Hadad son of Hazael the towns he had taken in battle from his father Jehoahaz. Three times Jehoash defeated him, and so he recovered the Israelite towns.</div>

His mother&#8217;s name was Jehoaddan; she was from Jerusalem. 3He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, but not as his father David had done. In everything he followed the example of his father Joash. 4The high places, however, were not removed; the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there.</div><div class="p"> 5After the kingdom was firmly in his grasp, he executed the officials who had murdered his father the king. 6Yet he did not put the children of the assassins to death, in accordance with what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses where the Lord commanded: &#8220;Parents are not to be put to death for their children, nor children put to death for their parents; each will die for their own sin.&#8221;#14:6 Deut. 24:16</div><div class="p"> 7He was the one who defeated ten thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt and captured Sela in battle, calling it Joktheel, the name it has to this day.</div><div class="p"> 8Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, with the challenge: &#8220;Come, let us face each other in battle.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 9But Jehoash king of Israel replied to Amaziah king of Judah: &#8220;A thistle in Lebanon sent a message to a cedar in Lebanon, &#8216;Give your daughter to my son in marriage.&#8217; Then a wild beast in Lebanon came along and trampled the thistle underfoot. 10You have indeed defeated Edom and now you are arrogant. Glory in your victory, but stay at home! Why ask for trouble and cause your own downfall and that of Judah also?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 11Amaziah, however, would not listen, so Jehoash king of Israel attacked. He and Amaziah king of Judah faced each other at Beth Shemesh in Judah. 12Judah was routed by Israel, and every man fled to his home. 13Jehoash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Ahaziah, at Beth Shemesh. Then Jehoash went to Jerusalem and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate&#8212;a section about four hundred cubits long.#14:13 That is, about 600 feet or about 180 meters 14He took all the gold and silver and all the articles found in the temple of the Lord and in the treasuries of the royal palace. He also took hostages and returned to Samaria.</div><div class="p"> 15As for the other events of the reign of Jehoash, what he did and his achievements, including his war against Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel? 16Jehoash rested with his ancestors and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel. And Jeroboam his son succeeded him as king.</div><div class="p"> 17Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah lived for fifteen years after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel. 18As for the other events of Amaziah&#8217;s reign, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah?</div><div class="p"> 19They conspired against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish, but they sent men after him to Lachish and killed him there. 20He was brought back by horse and was buried in Jerusalem with his ancestors, in the City of David.</div><div class="p"> 21Then all the people of Judah took Azariah,#14:21 Also called Uzziah who was sixteen years old, and made him king in place of his father Amaziah. 22He was the one who rebuilt Elath and restored it to Judah after Amaziah rested with his ancestors.</div><div class="s1">Jeroboam II King of Israel</div><div class="p"> 23In the fifteenth year of Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah, Jeroboam son of Jehoash king of Israel became king in Samaria, and he reigned forty-one years. 24He did evil in the eyes of the Lord and did not turn away from any of the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit. 25He was the one who restored the boundaries of Israel from Lebo Hamath to the Dead Sea,#14:25 Hebrew the Sea of the Arabah in accordance with the word of the Lord, the God of Israel, spoken through his servant Jonah son of Amittai, the prophet from Gath Hepher.</div><div class="p"> 26The Lord had seen how bitterly everyone in Israel, whether slave or free, was suffering;#14:26 Or Israel was suffering. He did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit.</div><div class="p"> 10Shallum son of Jabesh conspired against Zechariah. He attacked him in front of the people,#15:10 Hebrew; some Septuagint manuscripts in Ibleam assassinated him and succeeded him as king. 11The other events of Zechariah&#8217;s reign are written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel. 12So the word of the Lord spoken to Jehu was fulfilled: &#8220;Your descendants will sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation.&#8221;#15:12 2 Kings 10:30</div><div class="s1">Shallum King of Israel</div><div class="p"> 13Shallum son of Jabesh became king in the thirty-ninth year of Uzziah king of Judah, and he reigned in Samaria one month. 14Then Menahem son of Gadi went from Tirzah up to Samaria. He attacked Shallum son of Jabesh in Samaria, assassinated him and succeeded him as king.</div><div class="p"> 15The other events of Shallum&#8217;s reign, and the conspiracy he led, are written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel.</div><div class="p"> 16At that time Menahem, starting out from Tirzah, attacked Tiphsah and everyone in the city and its vicinity, because they refused to open their gates. He sacked Tiphsah and ripped open all the pregnant women.</div><div class="s1">Menahem King of Israel</div><div class="p"> 17In the thirty-ninth year of Azariah king of Judah, Menahem son of Gadi became king of Israel, and he reigned in Samaria ten years. 18He did evil in the eyes of the Lord. During his entire reign he did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit.</div><div class="p"> 19Then Pul#15:19 Also called Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria invaded the land, and Menahem gave him a thousand talents#15:19 That is, about 38 tons or about 34 metric tons of silver to gain his support and strengthen his own hold on the kingdom. 20Menahem exacted this money from Israel. Every wealthy person had to contribute fifty shekels#15:20 That is, about 1 1/4 pounds or about 575 grams of silver to be given to the king of Assyria. So the king of Assyria withdrew and stayed in the land no longer.</div><div class="p"> 21As for the other events of Menahem&#8217;s reign, and all he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel? 22Menahem rested with his ancestors. And Pekahiah his son succeeded him as king.</div><div class="s1">Pekahiah King of Israel</div><div class="p"> 23In the fiftieth year of Azariah king of Judah, Pekahiah son of Menahem became king of Israel in Samaria, and he reigned two years. 24Pekahiah did evil in the eyes of the Lord. He did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit. 25One of his chief officers, Pekah son of Remaliah, conspired against him. Taking fifty men of Gilead with him, he assassinated Pekahiah, along with Argob and Arieh, in the citadel of the royal palace at Samaria. So Pekah killed Pekahiah and succeeded him as king.</div><div class="p"> 26The other events of Pekahiah&#8217;s reign, and all he did, are written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel.</div><div class="s1">Pekah King of Israel</div><div class="p"> 27In the fifty-second year of Azariah king of Judah, Pekah son of Remaliah became king of Israel in Samaria, and he reigned twenty years. 28He did evil in the eyes of the Lord. He did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit.</div><div class="p"> 29In the time of Pekah king of Israel, Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria came and took Ijon, Abel Beth Maakah, Janoah, Kedesh and Hazor. He took Gilead and Galilee, including all the land of Naphtali, and deported the people to Assyria. 30Then Hoshea son of Elah conspired against Pekah son of Remaliah. Unlike David his father, he did not do what was right in the eyes of the Lord his God. 3He followed the ways of the kings of Israel and even sacrificed his son in the fire, engaging in the detestable practices of the nations the Lord had driven out before the Israelites. 4He offered sacrifices and burned incense at the high places, on the hilltops and under every spreading tree.</div><div class="p"> 5Then Rezin king of Aram and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel marched up to fight against Jerusalem and besieged Ahaz, but they could not overpower him. 6At that time, Rezin king of Aram recovered Elath for Aram by driving out the people of Judah. Edomites then moved into Elath and have lived there to this day.</div><div class="p"> 7Ahaz sent messengers to say to Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria, &#8220;I am your servant and vassal. Come up and save me out of the hand of the king of Aram and of the king of Israel, who are attacking me.&#8221; 8And Ahaz took the silver and gold found in the temple of the Lord and in the treasuries of the royal palace and sent it as a gift to the king of Assyria. 9The king of Assyria complied by attacking Damascus and capturing it. He deported its inhabitants to Kir and put Rezin to death.</div><div class="p"> 10Then King Ahaz went to Damascus to meet Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria. He saw an altar in Damascus and sent to Uriah the priest a sketch of the altar, with detailed plans for its construction. 11So Uriah the priest built an altar in accordance with all the plans that King Ahaz had sent from Damascus and finished it before King Ahaz returned. 12When the king came back from Damascus and saw the altar, he approached it and presented offerings#16:12 Or and went up on it. 13He offered up his burnt offering and grain offering, poured out his drink offering, and splashed the blood of his fellowship offerings against the altar. 14As for the bronze altar that stood before the Lord, he brought it from the front of the temple&#8212;from between the new altar and the temple of the Lord&#8212;and put it on the north side of the new altar.</div><div class="p"> 15King Ahaz then gave these orders to Uriah the priest: &#8220;On the large new altar, offer the morning burnt offering and the evening grain offering, the king&#8217;s burnt offering and his grain offering, and the burnt offering of all the people of the land, and their grain offering and their drink offering. Splash against this altar the blood of all the burnt offerings and sacrifices. But I will use the bronze altar for seeking guidance.&#8221; 16And Uriah the priest did just as King Ahaz had ordered.</div><div class="p"> 17King Ahaz cut off the side panels and removed the basins from the movable stands. He removed the Sea from the bronze bulls that supported it and set it on a stone base. 18He took away the Sabbath canopy#16:18 Or the dais of his throne (see Septuagint) that had been built at the temple and removed the royal entryway outside the temple of the Lord, in deference to the king of Assyria.</div><div class="p"> 19As for the other events of the reign of Ahaz, and what he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? 20Ahaz rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the City of David.  <div class="label">17</div><div class="s1">Hoshea Last King of Israel</div><div class="p"> 1In the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah, Hoshea son of Elah became king of Israel in Samaria, and he reigned nine years. 2He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, but not like the kings of Israel who preceded him.</div><div class="p"> 3Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up to attack Hoshea, who had been Shalmaneser&#8217;s vassal and had paid him tribute. 4But the king of Assyria discovered that Hoshea was a traitor, for he had sent envoys to So#17:4 So is probably an abbreviation for Osorkon. king of Egypt, and he no longer paid tribute to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year. Therefore Shalmaneser seized him and put him in prison. 5The king of Assyria invaded the entire land, marched against Samaria and laid siege to it for three years. 6In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria captured Samaria and deported the Israelites to Assyria. He settled them in Halah, in Gozan on the Habor River and in the towns of the Medes.</div><div class="s1">Israel Exiled Because of Sin</div><div class="p"> 7All this took place because the Israelites had sinned against the Lord their God, who had brought them up out of Egypt from under the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. They worshiped other gods 8and followed the practices of the nations the Lord had driven out before them, as well as the practices that the kings of Israel had introduced. 9The Israelites secretly did things against the Lord their God that were not right. From watchtower to fortified city they built themselves high places in all their towns. 10They set up sacred stones and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every spreading tree. 11At every high place they burned incense, as the nations whom the Lord had driven out before them had done. They did wicked things that aroused the Lord&#8217;s anger. 12They worshiped idols, though the Lord had said, &#8220;You shall not do this.&#8221;#17:12 Exodus 20:4,5 13The Lord warned Israel and Judah through all his prophets and seers: &#8220;Turn from your evil ways. Observe my commands and decrees, in accordance with the entire Law that I commanded your ancestors to obey and that I delivered to you through my servants the prophets.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 14But they would not listen and were as stiff-necked as their ancestors, who did not trust in the Lord their God. 15They rejected his decrees and the covenant he had made with their ancestors and the statutes he had warned them to keep. They followed worthless idols and themselves became worthless. They imitated the nations around them although the Lord had ordered them, &#8220;Do not do as they do.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 16They forsook all the commands of the Lord their God and made for themselves two idols cast in the shape of calves, and an Asherah pole. They bowed down to all the starry hosts, and they worshiped Baal. 17They sacrificed their sons and daughters in the fire. They practiced divination and sought omens and sold themselves to do evil in the eyes of the Lord, arousing his anger.</div><div class="p"> 18So the Lord was very angry with Israel and removed them from his presence. Only the tribe of Judah was left, 19and even Judah did not keep the commands of the Lord their God. They followed the practices Israel had introduced. 20Therefore the Lord rejected all the people of Israel; he afflicted them and gave them into the hands of plunderers, until he thrust them from his presence.</div><div class="p"> 21When he tore Israel away from the house of David, they made Jeroboam son of Nebat their king. Jeroboam enticed Israel away from following the Lord and caused them to commit a great sin. 22The Israelites persisted in all the sins of Jeroboam and did not turn away from them 23until the Lord removed them from his presence, as he had warned through all his servants the prophets. So the people of Israel were taken from their homeland into exile in Assyria, and they are still there.</div><div class="s1">Samaria Resettled</div><div class="p"> 24The king of Assyria brought people from Babylon, Kuthah, Avva, Hamath and Sepharvaim and settled them in the towns of Samaria to replace the Israelites. They took over Samaria and lived in its towns. 25When they first lived there, they did not worship the Lord; so he sent lions among them and they killed some of the people. 26It was reported to the king of Assyria: &#8220;The people you deported and resettled in the towns of Samaria do not know what the god of that country requires. He has sent lions among them, which are killing them off, because the people do not know what he requires.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 27Then the king of Assyria gave this order: &#8220;Have one of the priests you took captive from Samaria go back to live there and teach the people what the god of the land requires.&#8221; 28So one of the priests who had been exiled from Samaria came to live in Bethel and taught them how to worship the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 29Nevertheless, each national group made its own gods in the several towns where they settled, and set them up in the shrines the people of Samaria had made at the high places. 30The people from Babylon made Sukkoth Benoth, those from Kuthah made Nergal, and those from Hamath made Ashima; 31the Avvites made Nibhaz and Tartak, and the Sepharvites burned their children in the fire as sacrifices to Adrammelek and Anammelek, the gods of Sepharvaim. 32They worshiped the Lord, but they also appointed all sorts of their own people to officiate for them as priests in the shrines at the high places. 33They worshiped the Lord, but they also served their own gods in accordance with the customs of the nations from which they had been brought.</div><div class="p"> 34To this day they persist in their former practices. They neither worship the Lord nor adhere to the decrees and regulations, the laws and commands that the Lord gave the descendants of Jacob, whom he named Israel. 35When the Lord made a covenant with the Israelites, he commanded them: &#8220;Do not worship any other gods or bow down to them, serve them or sacrifice to them. 36But the Lord, who brought you up out of Egypt with mighty power and outstretched arm, is the one you must worship. To him you shall bow down and to him offer sacrifices. 37You must always be careful to keep the decrees and regulations, the laws and commands he wrote for you. Do not worship other gods. 38Do not forget the covenant I have made with you, and do not worship other gods. 39Rather, worship the Lord your God; it is he who will deliver you from the hand of all your enemies.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 40They would not listen, however, but persisted in their former practices. 41Even while these people were worshiping the Lord, they were serving their idols. To this day their children and grandchildren continue to do as their ancestors did.</div>

His mother&#8217;s name was Abijah#18:2 Hebrew Abi, a variant of Abijah daughter of Zechariah. 3He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, just as his father David had done. 4He removed the high places, smashed the sacred stones and cut down the Asherah poles. He broke into pieces the bronze snake Moses had made, for up to that time the Israelites had been burning incense to it. (It was called Nehushtan.#18:4 Nehushtan sounds like the Hebrew for both bronze and snake.)</div><div class="p"> 5Hezekiah trusted in the Lord, the God of Israel. There was no one like him among all the kings of Judah, either before him or after him. 6He held fast to the Lord and did not stop following him; he kept the commands the Lord had given Moses. 7And the Lord was with him; he was successful in whatever he undertook. He rebelled against the king of Assyria and did not serve him. 8From watchtower to fortified city, he defeated the Philistines, as far as Gaza and its territory.</div><div class="p"> 9In King Hezekiah&#8217;s fourth year, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, Shalmaneser king of Assyria marched against Samaria and laid siege to it. 10At the end of three years the Assyrians took it. So Samaria was captured in Hezekiah&#8217;s sixth year, which was the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel. 11The king of Assyria deported Israel to Assyria and settled them in Halah, in Gozan on the Habor River and in towns of the Medes. 12This happened because they had not obeyed the Lord their God, but had violated his covenant&#8212;all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded. They neither listened to the commands nor carried them out.</div><div class="p"> 13In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah&#8217;s reign, Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked all the fortified cities of Judah and captured them. 14So Hezekiah king of Judah sent this message to the king of Assyria at Lachish: &#8220;I have done wrong. Withdraw from me, and I will pay whatever you demand of me.&#8221; The king of Assyria exacted from Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents#18:14 That is, about 11 tons or about 10 metric tons of silver and thirty talents#18:14 That is, about 1 ton or about 1 metric ton of gold. 15So Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in the temple of the Lord and in the treasuries of the royal palace.</div><div class="p"> 16At this time Hezekiah king of Judah stripped off the gold with which he had covered the doors and doorposts of the temple of the Lord, and gave it to the king of Assyria.</div><div class="s1">Sennacherib Threatens Jerusalem</div><div class="p"> 17The king of Assyria sent his supreme commander, his chief officer and his field commander with a large army, from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem. They came up to Jerusalem and stopped at the aqueduct of the Upper Pool, on the road to the Washerman&#8217;s Field. 18They called for the king; and Eliakim son of Hilkiah the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary, and Joah son of Asaph the recorder went out to them.</div><div class="p"> 19The field commander said to them, &#8220;Tell Hezekiah:</div><div class="pm">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;This is what the great king, the king of Assyria, says: On what are you basing this confidence of yours? 20You say you have the counsel and the might for war&#8212;but you speak only empty words. On whom are you depending, that you rebel against me? 21Look, I know you are depending on Egypt, that splintered reed of a staff, which pierces the hand of anyone who leans on it! Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who depend on him. 22But if you say to me, &#8220;We are depending on the Lord our God&#8221;&#8212;isn&#8217;t he the one whose high places and altars Hezekiah removed, saying to Judah and Jerusalem, &#8220;You must worship before this altar in Jerusalem&#8221;?</div><div class="pm"> 23&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Come now, make a bargain with my master, the king of Assyria: I will give you two thousand horses&#8212;if you can put riders on them! 24How can you repulse one officer of the least of my master&#8217;s officials, even though you are depending on Egypt for chariots and horsemen#18:24 Or charioteers? 25Furthermore, have I come to attack and destroy this place without word from the Lord? The Lord himself told me to march against this country and destroy it.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 26Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, and Shebna and Joah said to the field commander, &#8220;Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, since we understand it. Don&#8217;t speak to us in Hebrew in the hearing of the people on the wall.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 27But the commander replied, &#8220;Was it only to your master and you that my master sent me to say these things, and not to the people sitting on the wall&#8212;who, like you, will have to eat their own excrement and drink their own urine?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 28Then the commander stood and called out in Hebrew, &#8220;Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria! 29This is what the king says: Do not let Hezekiah deceive you. He cannot deliver you from my hand. 30Do not let Hezekiah persuade you to trust in the Lord when he says, &#8216;The Lord will surely deliver us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 31&#8220;Do not listen to Hezekiah. This is what the king of Assyria says: Make peace with me and come out to me. Then each of you will eat fruit from your own vine and fig tree and drink water from your own cistern, 32until I come and take you to a land like your own&#8212;a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive trees and honey. Choose life and not death!</div><div class="p">&#8220;Do not listen to Hezekiah, for he is misleading you when he says, &#8216;The Lord will deliver us.&#8217; 33Has the god of any nation ever delivered his land from the hand of the king of Assyria? 34Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena and Ivvah? Have they rescued Samaria from my hand? 35Who of all the gods of these countries has been able to save his land from me? How then can the Lord deliver Jerusalem from my hand?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 36But the people remained silent and said nothing in reply, because the king had commanded, &#8220;Do not answer him.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 37Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary, and Joah son of Asaph the recorder went to Hezekiah, with their clothes torn, and told him what the field commander had said.</div>

 <div class="label">19</div><div class="s1">Jerusalem&#8217;s Deliverance Foretold</div><div class="p"> 1When King Hezekiah heard this, he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and went into the temple of the Lord. 2He sent Eliakim the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary and the leading priests, all wearing sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz. 3They told him, &#8220;This is what Hezekiah says: This day is a day of distress and rebuke and disgrace, as when children come to the moment of birth and there is no strength to deliver them. 4It may be that the Lord your God will hear all the words of the field commander, whom his master, the king of Assyria, has sent to ridicule the living God, and that he will rebuke him for the words the Lord your God has heard. Therefore pray for the remnant that still survives.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 5When King Hezekiah&#8217;s officials came to Isaiah, 6Isaiah said to them, &#8220;Tell your master, &#8216;This is what the Lord says: Do not be afraid of what you have heard&#8212;those words with which the underlings of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. 7Listen! When he hears a certain report, I will make him want to return to his own country, and there I will have him cut down with the sword.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 8When the field commander heard that the king of Assyria had left Lachish, he withdrew and found the king fighting against Libnah.</div><div class="p"> 9Now Sennacherib received a report that Tirhakah, the king of Cush,#19:9 That is, the upper Nile region was marching out to fight against him. So he again sent messengers to Hezekiah with this word: 10&#8220;Say to Hezekiah king of Judah: Do not let the god you depend on deceive you when he says, &#8216;Jerusalem will not be given into the hands of the king of Assyria.&#8217; 11Surely you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the countries, destroying them completely. And will you be delivered? 12Did the gods of the nations that were destroyed by my predecessors deliver them&#8212;the gods of Gozan, Harran, Rezeph and the people of Eden who were in Tel Assar? 13Where is the king of Hamath or the king of Arpad? Where are the kings of Lair, Sepharvaim, Hena and Ivvah?&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Hezekiah&#8217;s Prayer</div><div class="p"> 14Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it. Then he went up to the temple of the Lord and spread it out before the Lord. 15And Hezekiah prayed to the Lord: &#8220;Lord, the God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. 16Give ear, Lord, and hear; open your eyes, Lord, and see; listen to the words Sennacherib has sent to ridicule the living God.</div><div class="p"> 17&#8220;It is true, Lord, that the Assyrian kings have laid waste these nations and their lands. 18They have thrown their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods but only wood and stone, fashioned by human hands. 19Now, Lord our God, deliver us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone, Lord, are God.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Isaiah Prophesies Sennacherib&#8217;s Fall</div><div class="p"> 20Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah: &#8220;This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I have heard your prayer concerning Sennacherib king of Assyria. 21This is the word that the Lord has spoken against him:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Virgin Daughter Zion</div><div class="q2">despises you and mocks you.</div><div class="q1">Daughter Jerusalem</div><div class="q2">tosses her head as you flee.</div><div class="q1"> 22Who is it you have ridiculed and blasphemed?</div><div class="q2">Against whom have you raised your voice</div><div class="q1">and lifted your eyes in pride?</div><div class="q2">Against the Holy One of Israel!</div><div class="q1"> 23By your messengers</div><div class="q2">you have ridiculed the Lord.</div><div class="q1">And you have said,</div><div class="q2">&#8220;With my many chariots</div><div class="q1">I have ascended the heights of the mountains,</div><div class="q2">the utmost heights of Lebanon.</div><div class="q1">I have cut down its tallest cedars,</div><div class="q2">the choicest of its junipers.</div><div class="q1">I have reached its remotest parts,</div><div class="q2">the finest of its forests.</div><div class="q1"> 24I have dug wells in foreign lands</div><div class="q2">and drunk the water there.</div><div class="q1">With the soles of my feet</div><div class="q2">I have dried up all the streams of Egypt.&#8221;</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 25&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Have you not heard?</div><div class="q2">Long ago I ordained it.</div><div class="q1">In days of old I planned it;</div><div class="q2">now I have brought it to pass,</div><div class="q1">that you have turned fortified cities</div><div class="q2">into piles of stone.</div><div class="q1"> 26Their people, drained of power,</div><div class="q2">are dismayed and put to shame.</div><div class="q1">They are like plants in the field,</div><div class="q2">like tender green shoots,</div><div class="q1">like grass sprouting on the roof,</div><div class="q2">scorched before it grows up.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 27&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;But I know where you are</div><div class="q2">and when you come and go</div><div class="q2">and how you rage against me.</div><div class="q1"> 28Because you rage against me</div><div class="q2">and because your insolence has reached my ears,</div><div class="q1">I will put my hook in your nose</div><div class="q2">and my bit in your mouth,</div><div class="q1">and I will make you return</div><div class="q2">by the way you came.&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 29&#8220;This will be the sign for you, Hezekiah:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;This year you will eat what grows by itself,</div><div class="q2">and the second year what springs from that.</div><div class="q1">But in the third year sow and reap,</div><div class="q2">plant vineyards and eat their fruit.</div><div class="q1"> 30Once more a remnant of the kingdom of Judah</div><div class="q2">will take root below and bear fruit above.</div><div class="q1"> 31For out of Jerusalem will come a remnant,</div><div class="q2">and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors.</div><div class="m">&#8220;The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="p"> 32&#8220;Therefore this is what the Lord says concerning the king of Assyria:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;He will not enter this city</div><div class="q2">or shoot an arrow here.</div><div class="q1">He will not come before it with shield</div><div class="q2">or build a siege ramp against it.</div><div class="q1"> 33By the way that he came he will return;</div><div class="q2">he will not enter this city,</div><div class="q4">declares the Lord.</div><div class="q1"> 34I will defend this city and save it,</div><div class="q2">for my sake and for the sake of David my servant.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 35That night the angel of the Lord went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning&#8212;there were all the dead bodies! 36So Sennacherib king of Assyria broke camp and withdrew. He returned to Nineveh and stayed there.</div><div class="p"> 37One day, while he was worshiping in the temple of his god Nisrok, his sons Adrammelek and Sharezer killed him with the sword, and they escaped to the land of Ararat. And Esarhaddon his son succeeded him as king.</div>

The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to him and said, &#8220;This is what the Lord says: Put your house in order, because you are going to die; you will not recover.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 2Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord, 3&#8220;Remember, Lord, how I have walked before you faithfully and with wholehearted devotion and have done what is good in your eyes.&#8221; And Hezekiah wept bitterly.</div><div class="p"> 4Before Isaiah had left the middle court, the word of the Lord came to him: 5&#8220;Go back and tell Hezekiah, the ruler of my people, &#8216;This is what the Lord, the God of your father David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears; I will heal you. On the third day from now you will go up to the temple of the Lord. 6I will add fifteen years to your life. And I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria. I will defend this city for my sake and for the sake of my servant David.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 7Then Isaiah said, &#8220;Prepare a poultice of figs.&#8221; They did so and applied it to the boil, and he recovered.</div><div class="p"> 8Hezekiah had asked Isaiah, &#8220;What will be the sign that the Lord will heal me and that I will go up to the temple of the Lord on the third day from now?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 9Isaiah answered, &#8220;This is the Lord&#8217;s sign to you that the Lord will do what he has promised: Shall the shadow go forward ten steps, or shall it go back ten steps?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 10&#8220;It is a simple matter for the shadow to go forward ten steps,&#8221; said Hezekiah. &#8220;Rather, have it go back ten steps.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 11Then the prophet Isaiah called on the Lord, and the Lord made the shadow go back the ten steps it had gone down on the stairway of Ahaz.</div><div class="s1">Envoys From Babylon</div><div class="p"> 12At that time Marduk-Baladan son of Baladan king of Babylon sent Hezekiah letters and a gift, because he had heard of Hezekiah&#8217;s illness. 13Hezekiah received the envoys and showed them all that was in his storehouses&#8212;the silver, the gold, the spices and the fine olive oil&#8212;his armory and everything found among his treasures. There was nothing in his palace or in all his kingdom that Hezekiah did not show them.</div><div class="p"> 14Then Isaiah the prophet went to King Hezekiah and asked, &#8220;What did those men say, and where did they come from?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;From a distant land,&#8221; Hezekiah replied. &#8220;They came from Babylon.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 15The prophet asked, &#8220;What did they see in your palace?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;They saw everything in my palace,&#8221; Hezekiah said. &#8220;There is nothing among my treasures that I did not show them.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 16Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, &#8220;Hear the word of the Lord: 17The time will surely come when everything in your palace, and all that your predecessors have stored up until this day, will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left, says the Lord. 18And some of your descendants, your own flesh and blood who will be born to you, will be taken away, and they will become eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 19&#8220;The word of the Lord you have spoken is good,&#8221; Hezekiah replied. For he thought, &#8220;Will there not be peace and security in my lifetime?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 20As for the other events of Hezekiah&#8217;s reign, all his achievements and how he made the pool and the tunnel by which he brought water into the city, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? 21Hezekiah rested with his ancestors. And Manasseh his son succeeded him as king.</div>

His mother&#8217;s name was Hephzibah. 2He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, following the detestable practices of the nations the Lord had driven out before the Israelites. 3He rebuilt the high places his father Hezekiah had destroyed; he also erected altars to Baal and made an Asherah pole, as Ahab king of Israel had done. He bowed down to all the starry hosts and worshiped them. 4He built altars in the temple of the Lord, of which the Lord had said, &#8220;In Jerusalem I will put my Name.&#8221; 5In the two courts of the temple of the Lord, he built altars to all the starry hosts. 6He sacrificed his own son in the fire, practiced divination, sought omens, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the eyes of the Lord, arousing his anger.</div><div class="p"> 7He took the carved Asherah pole he had made and put it in the temple, of which the Lord had said to David and to his son Solomon, &#8220;In this temple and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will put my Name forever. 8I will not again make the feet of the Israelites wander from the land I gave their ancestors, if only they will be careful to do everything I commanded them and will keep the whole Law that my servant Moses gave them.&#8221; 9But the people did not listen. Manasseh led them astray, so that they did more evil than the nations the Lord had destroyed before the Israelites.</div><div class="p"> 10The Lord said through his servants the prophets: 11&#8220;Manasseh king of Judah has committed these detestable sins. He has done more evil than the Amorites who preceded him and has led Judah into sin with his idols. 12Therefore this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I am going to bring such disaster on Jerusalem and Judah that the ears of everyone who hears of it will tingle. 13I will stretch out over Jerusalem the measuring line used against Samaria and the plumb line used against the house of Ahab. I will wipe out Jerusalem as one wipes a dish, wiping it and turning it upside down. 14I will forsake the remnant of my inheritance and give them into the hands of enemies. They will be looted and plundered by all their enemies; 15they have done evil in my eyes and have aroused my anger from the day their ancestors came out of Egypt until this day.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 16Moreover, Manasseh also shed so much innocent blood that he filled Jerusalem from end to end&#8212;besides the sin that he had caused Judah to commit, so that they did evil in the eyes of the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 17As for the other events of Manasseh&#8217;s reign, and all he did, including the sin he committed, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? 18Manasseh rested with his ancestors and was buried in his palace garden, the garden of Uzza. And Amon his son succeeded him as king.</div><div class="s1">Amon King of Judah</div><div class="p"> 19Amon was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem two years. His mother&#8217;s name was Meshullemeth daughter of Haruz; she was from Jotbah. 20He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, as his father Manasseh had done. 21He followed completely the ways of his father, worshiping the idols his father had worshiped, and bowing down to them. 22He forsook the Lord, the God of his ancestors, and did not walk in obedience to him.</div><div class="p"> 23Amon&#8217;s officials conspired against him and assassinated the king in his palace. 24Then the people of the land killed all who had plotted against King Amon, and they made Josiah his son king in his place.</div><div class="p"> 25As for the other events of Amon&#8217;s reign, and what he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? 26He was buried in his tomb in the garden of Uzza. And Josiah his son succeeded him as king.</div>

 <div class="label">22</div><div class="s1">The Book of the Law Found</div><div class="p"> 1Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem thirty-one years. His mother&#8217;s name was Jedidah daughter of Adaiah; she was from Bozkath. 2He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and followed completely the ways of his father David, not turning aside to the right or to the left.</div><div class="p"> 3In the eighteenth year of his reign, King Josiah sent the secretary, Shaphan son of Azaliah, the son of Meshullam, to the temple of the Lord. He said: 4&#8220;Go up to Hilkiah the high priest and have him get ready the money that has been brought into the temple of the Lord, which the doorkeepers have collected from the people. 5Have them entrust it to the men appointed to supervise the work on the temple. And have these men pay the workers who repair the temple of the Lord&#8212; 6the carpenters, the builders and the masons. Also have them purchase timber and dressed stone to repair the temple. 7But they need not account for the money entrusted to them, because they are honest in their dealings.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 8Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the secretary, &#8220;I have found the Book of the Law in the temple of the Lord.&#8221; He gave it to Shaphan, who read it. 9Then Shaphan the secretary went to the king and reported to him: &#8220;Your officials have paid out the money that was in the temple of the Lord and have entrusted it to the workers and supervisors at the temple.&#8221; 10Then Shaphan the secretary informed the king, &#8220;Hilkiah the priest has given me a book.&#8221; And Shaphan read from it in the presence of the king.</div><div class="p"> 11When the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, he tore his robes. 12He gave these orders to Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam son of Shaphan, Akbor son of Micaiah, Shaphan the secretary and Asaiah the king&#8217;s attendant: 13&#8220;Go and inquire of the Lord for me and for the people and for all Judah about what is written in this book that has been found. Great is the Lord&#8217;s anger that burns against us because those who have gone before us have not obeyed the words of this book; they have not acted in accordance with all that is written there concerning us.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 14Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Akbor, Shaphan and Asaiah went to speak to the prophet Huldah, who was the wife of Shallum son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe. She lived in Jerusalem, in the New Quarter.</div><div class="p"> 15She said to them, &#8220;This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Tell the man who sent you to me, 16&#8216;This is what the Lord says: I am going to bring disaster on this place and its people, according to everything written in the book the king of Judah has read. 17Because they have forsaken me and burned incense to other gods and aroused my anger by all the idols their hands have made,#22:17 Or by everything they have done my anger will burn against this place and will not be quenched.&#8217; 18Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the Lord, &#8216;This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says concerning the words you heard: 19Because your heart was responsive and you humbled yourself before the Lord when you heard what I have spoken against this place and its people&#8212;that they would become a curse#22:19 That is, their names would be used in cursing (see Jer. 29:22); or, others would see that they are cursed. and be laid waste&#8212;and because you tore your robes and wept in my presence, I also have heard you, declares the Lord. 20Therefore I will gather you to your ancestors, and you will be buried in peace. Your eyes will not see all the disaster I am going to bring on this place.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p">So they took her answer back to the king.</div>

 <div class="label">23</div><div class="s1">Josiah Renews the Covenant</div><div class="p"> 1Then the king called together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. 2He went up to the temple of the Lord with the people of Judah, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the priests and the prophets&#8212;all the people from the least to the greatest. He read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant, which had been found in the temple of the Lord. 3The king stood by the pillar and renewed the covenant in the presence of the Lord&#8212;to follow the Lord and keep his commands, statutes and decrees with all his heart and all his soul, thus confirming the words of the covenant written in this book. Then all the people pledged themselves to the covenant.</div><div class="p"> 4The king ordered Hilkiah the high priest, the priests next in rank and the doorkeepers to remove from the temple of the Lord all the articles made for Baal and Asherah and all the starry hosts. He burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of the Kidron Valley and took the ashes to Bethel. 5He did away with the idolatrous priests appointed by the kings of Judah to burn incense on the high places of the towns of Judah and on those around Jerusalem&#8212;those who burned incense to Baal, to the sun and moon, to the constellations and to all the starry hosts. 6He took the Asherah pole from the temple of the Lord to the Kidron Valley outside Jerusalem and burned it there. He ground it to powder and scattered the dust over the graves of the common people. 7He also tore down the quarters of the male shrine prostitutes that were in the temple of the Lord, the quarters where women did weaving for Asherah.</div><div class="p"> 8Josiah brought all the priests from the towns of Judah and desecrated the high places, from Geba to Beersheba, where the priests had burned incense.  <div class="label">5</div><div class="s1">Reuben</div><div class="p"> 1The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel (he was the firstborn, but when he defiled his father&#8217;s marriage bed, his rights as firstborn were given to the sons of Joseph son of Israel; so he could not be listed in the genealogical record in accordance with his birthright, 2and though Judah was the strongest of his brothers and a ruler came from him, the rights of the firstborn belonged to Joseph)&#8212; 3the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel:</div><div class="li1">Hanok, Pallu, Hezron and Karmi.</div><div class="li1"> 4The descendants of Joel:</div><div class="li2">Shemaiah his son, Gog his son,</div><div class="li2">Shimei his son, 5Micah his son,</div><div class="li2">Reaiah his son, Baal his son,</div><div class="li2"> 6and Beerah his son, whom Tiglath-Pileser#5:6 Hebrew Tilgath-Pilneser, a variant of Tiglath-Pileser; also in verse 26 king of Assyria took into exile. Beerah was a leader of the Reubenites.</div><div class="li1"> 7Their relatives by clans, listed according to their genealogical records:</div><div class="li2">Jeiel the chief, Zechariah, 8and Bela son of Azaz, the son of Shema, the son of Joel. They settled in the area from Aroer to Nebo and Baal Meon. 9To the east they occupied the land up to the edge of the desert that extends to the Euphrates River, because their livestock had increased in Gilead.</div><div class="pi2"> 10During Saul&#8217;s reign they waged war against the Hagrites, who were defeated at their hands; they occupied the dwellings of the Hagrites throughout the entire region east of Gilead.</div><div class="s1">Gad</div><div class="li1"> 11The Gadites lived next to them in Bashan, as far as Salekah:</div><div class="li2"> 12Joel was the chief, Shapham the second, then Janai and Shaphat, in Bashan.</div><div class="li1"> 13Their relatives, by families, were:</div><div class="li2">Michael, Meshullam, Sheba, Jorai, Jakan, Zia and Eber&#8212;seven in all.</div><div class="li2"> 14These were the sons of Abihail son of Huri, the son of Jaroah, the son of Gilead, the son of Michael, the son of Jeshishai, the son of Jahdo, the son of Buz.</div><div class="li2"> 15Ahi son of Abdiel, the son of Guni, was head of their family.</div><div class="li1"> 16The Gadites lived in Gilead, in Bashan and its outlying villages, and on all the pasturelands of Sharon as far as they extended.</div><div class="p"> 17All these were entered in the genealogical records during the reigns of Jotham king of Judah and Jeroboam king of Israel.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="p"> 18The Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh had 44,760 men ready for military service&#8212;able-bodied men who could handle shield and sword, who could use a bow, and who were trained for battle. 19They waged war against the Hagrites, Jetur, Naphish and Nodab. 20They were helped in fighting them, and God delivered the Hagrites and all their allies into their hands, because they cried out to him during the battle. He answered their prayers, because they trusted in him. 21They seized the livestock of the Hagrites&#8212;fifty thousand camels, two hundred fifty thousand sheep and two thousand donkeys. They also took one hundred thousand people captive, 22and many others fell slain, because the battle was God&#8217;s. And they occupied the land until the exile.</div><div class="s1">The Half-Tribe of Manasseh</div><div class="p"> 23The people of the half-tribe of Manasseh were numerous; they settled in the land from Bashan to Baal Hermon, that is, to Senir (Mount Hermon).</div><div class="p"> 24These were the heads of their families: Epher, Ishi, Eliel, Azriel, Jeremiah, Hodaviah and Jahdiel. They were brave warriors, famous men, and heads of their families. 25But they were unfaithful to the God of their ancestors and prostituted themselves to the gods of the peoples of the land, whom God had destroyed before them. 26So the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Pul king of Assyria (that is, Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria), who took the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh into exile. He took them to Halah, Habor, Hara and the river of Gozan, where they are to this day.</div>

During the reign of David, the descendants of Tola listed as fighting men in their genealogy numbered 22,600.</div><div class="li1"> 3The son of Uzzi:</div><div class="li2">Izrahiah.</div><div class="li1">The sons of Izrahiah:</div><div class="li2">Michael, Obadiah, Joel and Ishiah. All five of them were chiefs. 4According to their family genealogy, they had 36,000 men ready for battle, for they had many wives and children.</div><div class="li1"> 5The relatives who were fighting men belonging to all the clans of Issachar, as listed in their genealogy, were 87,000 in all.</div><div class="s1">Benjamin</div><div class="li1"> 6Three sons of Benjamin:</div><div class="li2">Bela, Beker and Jediael.</div><div class="li1"> 7The sons of Bela:</div><div class="li2">Ezbon, Uzzi, Uzziel, Jerimoth and Iri, heads of families&#8212;five in all. Their genealogical record listed 22,034 fighting men.</div><div class="li1"> 8The sons of Beker:</div><div class="li2">Zemirah, Joash, Eliezer, Elioenai, Omri, Jeremoth, Abijah, Anathoth and Alemeth. All these were the sons of Beker. 9Their genealogical record listed the heads of families and 20,200 fighting men.</div><div class="li1"> 10The son of Jediael:</div><div class="li2">Bilhan.</div><div class="li1">The sons of Bilhan:</div><div class="li2">Jeush, Benjamin, Ehud, Kenaanah, Zethan, Tarshish and Ahishahar. 11All these sons of Jediael were heads of families. There were 17,200 fighting men ready to go out to war.</div><div class="li1"> 12The Shuppites and Huppites were the descendants of Ir, and the Hushites#7:12 Or Ir. The sons of Dan: Hushim, (see Gen. 46:23); Hebrew does not have The sons of Dan. the descendants of Aher.</div><div class="s1">Naphtali</div><div class="li1"> 13The sons of Naphtali:</div><div class="li2">Jahziel, Guni, Jezer and Shillem#7:13 Some Hebrew and Septuagint manuscripts (see also Gen. 46:24 and Num. 26:49); most Hebrew manuscripts Shallum&#8212;the descendants of Bilhah.</div><div class="s1">Manasseh</div><div class="li1"> 14The descendants of Manasseh:</div><div class="pi2">Asriel was his descendant through his Aramean concubine. She gave birth to Makir the father of Gilead. 15Makir took a wife from among the Huppites and Shuppites. His sister&#8217;s name was Maakah.</div><div class="pi2">Another descendant was named Zelophehad, who had only daughters.</div><div class="pi2"> 16Makir&#8217;s wife Maakah gave birth to a son and named him Peresh. His brother was named Sheresh, and his sons were Ulam and Rakem.</div><div class="li1"> 17The son of Ulam:</div><div class="li2">Bedan.</div><div class="li1">These were the sons of Gilead son of Makir, the son of Manasseh. 18His sister Hammoleketh gave birth to Ishhod, Abiezer and Mahlah.</div><div class="li1"> 19The sons of Shemida were:</div><div class="li2">Ahian, Shechem, Likhi and Aniam.</div><div class="s1">Ephraim</div><div class="li1"> 20The descendants of Ephraim:</div><div class="li2">Shuthelah, Bered his son,</div><div class="li2">Tahath his son, Eleadah his son,</div><div class="li2">Tahath his son, 21Zabad his son</div><div class="li2">and Shuthelah his son.</div><div class="pi2">Ezer and Elead were killed by the native-born men of Gath, when they went down to seize their livestock. 22Their father Ephraim mourned for them many days, and his relatives came to comfort him. 23Then he made love to his wife again, and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. They were able men, responsible for ministering in the house of God.</div><div class="li1"> 14Of the Levites:</div><div class="li2">Shemaiah son of Hasshub, the son of Azrikam, the son of Hashabiah, a Merarite; 15Bakbakkar, Heresh, Galal and Mattaniah son of Mika, the son of Zikri, the son of Asaph; 16Obadiah son of Shemaiah, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun; and Berekiah son of Asa, the son of Elkanah, who lived in the villages of the Netophathites.</div><div class="li1"> 17The gatekeepers:</div><div class="li2">Shallum, Akkub, Talmon, Ahiman and their fellow Levites, Shallum their chief 18being stationed at the King&#8217;s Gate on the east, up to the present time. These were the gatekeepers belonging to the camp of the Levites. 19Shallum son of Kore, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of Korah, and his fellow gatekeepers from his family (the Korahites) were responsible for guarding the thresholds of the tent just as their ancestors had been responsible for guarding the entrance to the dwelling of the Lord. 20In earlier times Phinehas son of Eleazar was the official in charge of the gatekeepers, and the Lord was with him. 21Zechariah son of Meshelemiah was the gatekeeper at the entrance to the tent of meeting.</div><div class="p"> 22Altogether, those chosen to be gatekeepers at the thresholds numbered 212. They were registered by genealogy in their villages. The gatekeepers had been assigned to their positions of trust by David and Samuel the seer. 23They and their descendants were in charge of guarding the gates of the house of the Lord&#8212;the house called the tent of meeting. 24The gatekeepers were on the four sides: east, west, north and south. 25Their fellow Levites in their villages had to come from time to time and share their duties for seven-day periods. 26But the four principal gatekeepers, who were Levites, were entrusted with the responsibility for the rooms and treasuries in the house of God. 27They would spend the night stationed around the house of God, because they had to guard it; and they had charge of the key for opening it each morning.</div><div class="p"> 28Some of them were in charge of the articles used in the temple service; they counted them when they were brought in and when they were taken out. 29Others were assigned to take care of the furnishings and all the other articles of the sanctuary, as well as the special flour and wine, and the olive oil, incense and spices. 30But some of the priests took care of mixing the spices. 31A Levite named Mattithiah, the firstborn son of Shallum the Korahite, was entrusted with the responsibility for baking the offering bread. 32Some of the Kohathites, their fellow Levites, were in charge of preparing for every Sabbath the bread set out on the table.</div><div class="p"> 33Those who were musicians, heads of Levite families, stayed in the rooms of the temple and were exempt from other duties because they were responsible for the work day and night.</div><div class="p"> 34All these were heads of Levite families, chiefs as listed in their genealogy, and they lived in Jerusalem.</div><div class="s1">The Genealogy of Saul</div><div class="li1"> 35Jeiel the father#9:35 Father may mean civic leader or military leader. of Gibeon lived in Gibeon.</div><div class="li2">His wife&#8217;s name was Maakah, 36and his firstborn son was Abdon, followed by Zur, Kish, Baal, Ner, Nadab, 37Gedor, Ahio, Zechariah and Mikloth. 38Mikloth was the father of Shimeam.  <div class="label">10</div><div class="s1">Saul Takes His Life</div><div class="p"> 1Now the Philistines fought against Israel; the Israelites fled before them, and many fell dead on Mount Gilboa. 2The Philistines were in hot pursuit of Saul and his sons, and they killed his sons Jonathan, Abinadab and Malki-Shua. 3The fighting grew fierce around Saul, and when the archers overtook him, they wounded him.</div><div class="p"> 4Saul said to his armor-bearer, &#8220;Draw your sword and run me through, or these uncircumcised fellows will come and abuse me.&#8221;</div><div class="p">But his armor-bearer was terrified and would not do it; so Saul took his own sword and fell on it. 5When the armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his sword and died. 6So Saul and his three sons died, and all his house died together.</div><div class="p"> 7When all the Israelites in the valley saw that the army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their towns and fled. And the Philistines came and occupied them.</div><div class="p"> 8The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. 9They stripped him and took his head and his armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to proclaim the news among their idols and their people. 10They put his armor in the temple of their gods and hung up his head in the temple of Dagon.</div><div class="p"> 11When all the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, 12all their valiant men went and took the bodies of Saul and his sons and brought them to Jabesh. Then they buried their bones under the great tree in Jabesh, and they fasted seven days.</div><div class="p"> 13Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord; he did not keep the word of the Lord and even consulted a medium for guidance, 14and did not inquire of the Lord. So the Lord put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.</div>

 <div class="label">11</div><div class="s1">David Becomes King Over Israel</div><div class="p"> 1All Israel came together to David at Hebron and said, &#8220;We are your own flesh and blood. 2In the past, even while Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel on their military campaigns. And the Lord your God said to you, &#8216;You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will become their ruler.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 3When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, he made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel, as the Lord had promised through Samuel.</div><div class="s1">David Conquers Jerusalem</div><div class="p"> 4David and all the Israelites marched to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus). The Jebusites who lived there 5said to David, &#8220;You will not get in here.&#8221; Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion&#8212;which is the City of David.</div><div class="p"> 6David had said, &#8220;Whoever leads the attack on the Jebusites will become commander in chief.&#8221; Joab son of Zeruiah went up first, and so he received the command.</div><div class="p"> 7David then took up residence in the fortress, and so it was called the City of David. 8He built up the city around it, from the terraces#11:8 Or the Millo to the surrounding wall, while Joab restored the rest of the city. 9And David became more and more powerful, because the Lord Almighty was with him.</div><div class="s1">David&#8217;s Mighty Warriors</div><div class="p"> 10These were the chiefs of David&#8217;s mighty warriors&#8212;they, together with all Israel, gave his kingship strong support to extend it over the whole land, as the Lord had promised&#8212; 11this is the list of David&#8217;s mighty warriors:</div><div class="p">Jashobeam,#11:11 Possibly a variant of Jashob-Baal a Hakmonite, was chief of the officers#11:11 Or Thirty; some Septuagint manuscripts Three (see also 2 Samuel 23:8); he raised his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed in one encounter.</div><div class="p"> 12Next to him was Eleazar son of Dodai the Ahohite, one of the three mighty warriors. 13He was with David at Pas Dammim when the Philistines gathered there for battle. At a place where there was a field full of barley, the troops fled from the Philistines. 14But they took their stand in the middle of the field. They defended it and struck the Philistines down, and the Lord brought about a great victory.</div><div class="p"> 15Three of the thirty chiefs came down to David to the rock at the cave of Adullam, while a band of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim. 16At that time David was in the stronghold, and the Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem. 17David longed for water and said, &#8220;Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!&#8221; 18So the Three broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and carried it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out to the Lord. 19&#8220;God forbid that I should do this!&#8221; he said. &#8220;Should I drink the blood of these men who went at the risk of their lives?&#8221; Because they risked their lives to bring it back, David would not drink it.</div><div class="p">Such were the exploits of the three mighty warriors.</div><div class="p"> 20Abishai the brother of Joab was chief of the Three. He raised his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed, and so he became as famous as the Three. 21He was doubly honored above the Three and became their commander, even though he was not included among them.</div><div class="p"> 22Benaiah son of Jehoiada, a valiant fighter from Kabzeel, performed great exploits. He struck down Moab&#8217;s two mightiest warriors. He also went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion. 23And he struck down an Egyptian who was five cubits#11:23 That is, about 7 feet 6 inches or about 2.3 meters tall. Although the Egyptian had a spear like a weaver&#8217;s rod in his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club. He snatched the spear from the Egyptian&#8217;s hand and killed him with his own spear. 24Such were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada; he too was as famous as the three mighty warriors. 25He was held in greater honor than any of the Thirty, but he was not included among the Three.  <div class="label">12</div><div class="s1">Warriors Join David</div><div class="p"> 1These were the men who came to David at Ziklag, while he was banished from the presence of Saul son of Kish (they were among the warriors who helped him in battle; 2they were armed with bows and were able to shoot arrows or to sling stones right-handed or left-handed; they were relatives of Saul from the tribe of Benjamin):</div><div class="b"></div><div class="mi"> 3Ahiezer their chief and Joash the sons of Shemaah the Gibeathite; Jeziel and Pelet the sons of Azmaveth; Berakah, Jehu the Anathothite, 4and Ishmaiah the Gibeonite, a mighty warrior among the Thirty, who was a leader of the Thirty; Jeremiah, Jahaziel, Johanan, Jozabad the Gederathite,#12:4 In Hebrew texts the second half of this verse (Jeremiah&#8230; Gederathite) is numbered 12:5, and 12:5-40 is numbered 12:6-41. 5Eluzai, Jerimoth, Bealiah, Shemariah and Shephatiah the Haruphite; 6Elkanah, Ishiah, Azarel, Joezer and Jashobeam the Korahites; 7and Joelah and Zebadiah the sons of Jeroham from Gedor.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="p"> 8Some Gadites defected to David at his stronghold in the wilderness. They were brave warriors, ready for battle and able to handle the shield and spear. Their faces were the faces of lions, and they were as swift as gazelles in the mountains.</div><div class="li1"> 9Ezer was the chief,</div><div class="li1">Obadiah the second in command, Eliab the third,</div><div class="li1"> 10Mishmannah the fourth, Jeremiah the fifth,</div><div class="li1"> 11Attai the sixth, Eliel the seventh,</div><div class="li1"> 12Johanan the eighth, Elzabad the ninth,</div><div class="li1"> 13Jeremiah the tenth and Makbannai the eleventh.</div><div class="p"> 14These Gadites were army commanders; the least was a match for a hundred, and the greatest for a thousand. 15It was they who crossed the Jordan in the first month when it was overflowing all its banks, and they put to flight everyone living in the valleys, to the east and to the west.</div><div class="p"> 16Other Benjamites and some men from Judah also came to David in his stronghold. 17David went out to meet them and said to them, &#8220;If you have come to me in peace to help me, I am ready for you to join me. But if you have come to betray me to my enemies when my hands are free from violence, may the God of our ancestors see it and judge you.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 18Then the Spirit came on Amasai, chief of the Thirty, and he said:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;We are yours, David!</div><div class="q2">We are with you, son of Jesse!</div><div class="q1">Success, success to you,</div><div class="q2">and success to those who help you,</div><div class="q3">for your God will help you.&#8221;</div><div class="p">So David received them and made them leaders of his raiding bands.</div><div class="p"> 19Some of the tribe of Manasseh defected to David when he went with the Philistines to fight against Saul. (He and his men did not help the Philistines because, after consultation, their rulers sent him away. They said, &#8220;It will cost us our heads if he deserts to his master Saul.&#8221;) 20When David went to Ziklag, these were the men of Manasseh who defected to him: Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu and Zillethai, leaders of units of a thousand in Manasseh. 21They helped David against raiding bands, for all of them were brave warriors, and they were commanders in his army. 22Day after day men came to help David, until he had a great army, like the army of God.#12:22 Or a great and mighty army</div><div class="s1">Others Join David at Hebron</div><div class="p"> 23These are the numbers of the men armed for battle who came to David at Hebron to turn Saul&#8217;s kingdom over to him, as the Lord had said:</div><div class="li1"> 24from Judah, carrying shield and spear&#8212;6,800 armed for battle;</div><div class="li1"> 25from Simeon, warriors ready for battle&#8212;7,100;</div><div class="li1"> 26from Levi&#8212;4,600, 27including Jehoiada, leader of the family of Aaron, with 3,700 men, 28and Zadok, a brave young warrior, with 22 officers from his family;</div><div class="li1"> 29from Benjamin, Saul&#8217;s tribe&#8212;3,000, most of whom had remained loyal to Saul&#8217;s house until then;</div><div class="li1"> 30from Ephraim, brave warriors, famous in their own clans&#8212;20,800;</div><div class="li1"> 31from half the tribe of Manasseh, designated by name to come and make David king&#8212;18,000;</div><div class="li1"> 32from Issachar, men who understood the times and knew what Israel should do&#8212;200 chiefs, with all their relatives under their command;</div><div class="li1"> 33from Zebulun, experienced soldiers prepared for battle with every type of weapon, to help David with undivided loyalty&#8212;50,000;</div><div class="li1"> 34from Naphtali&#8212;1,000 officers, together with 37,000 men carrying shields and spears;</div><div class="li1"> 35from Dan, ready for battle&#8212;28,600;</div><div class="li1"> 36from Asher, experienced soldiers prepared for battle&#8212;40,000;</div><div class="li1"> 37and from east of the Jordan, from Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh, armed with every type of weapon&#8212;120,000.</div><div class="p"> 38All these were fighting men who volunteered to serve in the ranks. They came to Hebron fully determined to make David king over all Israel. All the rest of the Israelites were also of one mind to make David king. 39The men spent three days there with David, eating and drinking, for their families had supplied provisions for them. 40Also, their neighbors from as far away as Issachar, Zebulun and Naphtali came bringing food on donkeys, camels, mules and oxen. There were plentiful supplies of flour, fig cakes, raisin cakes, wine, olive oil, cattle and sheep, for there was joy in Israel.</div>

 <div class="label">13</div><div class="s1">Bringing Back the Ark</div><div class="p"> 1David conferred with each of his officers, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds. 2He then said to the whole assembly of Israel, &#8220;If it seems good to you and if it is the will of the Lord our God, let us send word far and wide to the rest of our people throughout the territories of Israel, and also to the priests and Levites who are with them in their towns and pasturelands, to come and join us. 3Let us bring the ark of our God back to us, for we did not inquire of#13:3 Or we neglected it#13:3 Or him during the reign of Saul.&#8221; 4The whole assembly agreed to do this, because it seemed right to all the people.</div><div class="p"> 5So David assembled all Israel, from the Shihor River in Egypt to Lebo Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath Jearim. 6David and all Israel went to Baalah of Judah (Kiriath Jearim) to bring up from there the ark of God the Lord, who is enthroned between the cherubim&#8212;the ark that is called by the Name.</div><div class="p"> 7They moved the ark of God from Abinadab&#8217;s house on a new cart, with Uzzah and Ahio guiding it. 8David and all the Israelites were celebrating with all their might before God, with songs and with harps, lyres, timbrels, cymbals and trumpets.</div><div class="p"> 9When they came to the threshing floor of Kidon, Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the ark, because the oxen stumbled. 10The Lord&#8217;s anger burned against Uzzah, and he struck him down because he had put his hand on the ark. So he died there before God.</div><div class="p"> 11Then David was angry because the Lord&#8217;s wrath had broken out against Uzzah, and to this day that place is called Perez Uzzah.#13:11 Perez Uzzah means outbreak against Uzzah.</div><div class="p"> 12David was afraid of God that day and asked, &#8220;How can I ever bring the ark of God to me?&#8221; 13He did not take the ark to be with him in the City of David. Instead, he took it to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. 14The ark of God remained with the family of Obed-Edom in his house for three months, and the Lord blessed his household and everything he had.</div>

 <div class="label">14</div><div class="s1">David&#8217;s House and Family</div><div class="p"> 1Now Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, along with cedar logs, stonemasons and carpenters to build a palace for him. 2And David knew that the Lord had established him as king over Israel and that his kingdom had been highly exalted for the sake of his people Israel.</div><div class="p"> 3In Jerusalem David took more wives and became the father of more sons and daughters. 4These are the names of the children born to him there: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 5Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet, 6Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, 7Elishama, Beeliada#14:7 A variant of Eliada and Eliphelet.</div><div class="s1">David Defeats the Philistines</div><div class="p"> 8When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, they went up in full force to search for him, but David heard about it and went out to meet them. 9Now the Philistines had come and raided the Valley of Rephaim; 10so David inquired of God: &#8220;Shall I go and attack the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hands?&#8221;</div><div class="p">The Lord answered him, &#8220;Go, I will deliver them into your hands.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 11So David and his men went up to Baal Perazim, and there he defeated them. He said, &#8220;As waters break out, God has broken out against my enemies by my hand.&#8221; So that place was called Baal Perazim.#14:11 Baal Perazim means the lord who breaks out. 12The Philistines had abandoned their gods there, and David gave orders to burn them in the fire.</div><div class="p"> 13Once more the Philistines raided the valley; 14so David inquired of God again, and God answered him, &#8220;Do not go directly after them, but circle around them and attack them in front of the poplar trees. 15As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the poplar trees, move out to battle, because that will mean God has gone out in front of you to strike the Philistine army.&#8221; 16So David did as God commanded him, and they struck down the Philistine army, all the way from Gibeon to Gezer.</div><div class="p"> 17So David&#8217;s fame spread throughout every land, and the Lord made all the nations fear him.</div>

 <div class="label">15</div><div class="s1">The Ark Brought to Jerusalem</div><div class="p"> 1After David had constructed buildings for himself in the City of David, he prepared a place for the ark of God and pitched a tent for it. 2Then David said, &#8220;No one but the Levites may carry the ark of God, because the Lord chose them to carry the ark of the Lord and to minister before him forever.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 3David assembled all Israel in Jerusalem to bring up the ark of the Lord to the place he had prepared for it. 4He called together the descendants of Aaron and the Levites:</div><div class="li1"> 5From the descendants of Kohath,</div><div class="li2">Uriel the leader and 120 relatives;</div><div class="li1"> 6from the descendants of Merari,</div><div class="li2">Asaiah the leader and 220 relatives;</div><div class="li1"> 7from the descendants of Gershon,#15:7 Hebrew Gershom, a variant of Gershon</div><div class="li2">Joel the leader and 130 relatives;</div><div class="li1"> 8from the descendants of Elizaphan,</div><div class="li2">Shemaiah the leader and 200 relatives;</div><div class="li1"> 9from the descendants of Hebron,</div><div class="li2">Eliel the leader and 80 relatives;</div><div class="li1"> 10from the descendants of Uzziel,</div><div class="li2">Amminadab the leader and 112 relatives.</div><div class="p"> 11Then David summoned Zadok and Abiathar the priests, and Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel and Amminadab the Levites. 12He said to them, &#8220;You are the heads of the Levitical families; you and your fellow Levites are to consecrate yourselves and bring up the ark of the Lord, the God of Israel, to the place I have prepared for it. 13It was because you, the Levites, did not bring it up the first time that the Lord our God broke out in anger against us. We did not inquire of him about how to do it in the prescribed way.&#8221; 14So the priests and Levites consecrated themselves in order to bring up the ark of the Lord, the God of Israel. 15And the Levites carried the ark of God with the poles on their shoulders, as Moses had commanded in accordance with the word of the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 16David told the leaders of the Levites to appoint their fellow Levites as musicians to make a joyful sound with musical instruments: lyres, harps and cymbals.</div><div class="p"> 17So the Levites appointed Heman son of Joel; from his relatives, Asaph son of Berekiah; and from their relatives the Merarites, Ethan son of Kushaiah; 18and with them their relatives next in rank: Zechariah,#15:18 Three Hebrew manuscripts and most Septuagint manuscripts (see also verse 20 and 16:5); most Hebrew manuscripts Zechariah son and or Zechariah, Ben and Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-Edom and Jeiel,#15:18 Hebrew; Septuagint (see also verse 21) Jeiel and Azaziah the gatekeepers.</div><div class="p"> 19The musicians Heman, Asaph and Ethan were to sound the bronze cymbals; 20Zechariah, Jaaziel,#15:20 See verse 18; Hebrew Aziel, a variant of Jaaziel. Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah and Benaiah were to play the lyres according to alamoth,#15:20 Probably a musical term 21and Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-Edom, Jeiel and Azaziah were to play the harps, directing according to sheminith.#15:21 Probably a musical term 22Kenaniah the head Levite was in charge of the singing; that was his responsibility because he was skillful at it.</div><div class="p"> 23Berekiah and Elkanah were to be doorkeepers for the ark. 24Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah and Eliezer the priests were to blow trumpets before the ark of God. Obed-Edom and Jehiah were also to be doorkeepers for the ark.</div><div class="p"> 25So David and the elders of Israel and the commanders of units of a thousand went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the Lord from the house of Obed-Edom, with rejoicing. 26Because God had helped the Levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord, seven bulls and seven rams were sacrificed. 27Now David was clothed in a robe of fine linen, as were all the Levites who were carrying the ark, and as were the musicians, and Kenaniah, who was in charge of the singing of the choirs. David also wore a linen ephod. 28So all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the Lord with shouts, with the sounding of rams&#8217; horns and trumpets, and of cymbals, and the playing of lyres and harps.</div><div class="p"> 29As the ark of the covenant of the Lord was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David dancing and celebrating, she despised him in her heart.</div>

 <div class="label">17</div><div class="s1">God&#8217;s Promise to David</div><div class="p"> 1After David was settled in his palace, he said to Nathan the prophet, &#8220;Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of the covenant of the Lord is under a tent.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 2Nathan replied to David, &#8220;Whatever you have in mind, do it, for God is with you.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 3But that night the word of God came to Nathan, saying:</div><div class="pm"> 4&#8220;Go and tell my servant David, &#8216;This is what the Lord says: You are not the one to build me a house to dwell in. 5I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought Israel up out of Egypt to this day. I have moved from one tent site to another, from one dwelling place to another. 6Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their leaders#17:6 Traditionally judges; also in verse 10 whom I commanded to shepherd my people, &#8220;Why have you not built me a house of cedar?&#8221;&#8198;&#8217;</div><div class="pm"> 7&#8220;Now then, tell my servant David, &#8216;This is what the Lord Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel. 8I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name like the names of the greatest men on earth. 9And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning 10and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel. I will also subdue all your enemies.</div><div class="pm">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;I declare to you that the Lord will build a house for you: 11When your days are over and you go to be with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom. 12He is the one who will build a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever. 13I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will never take my love away from him, as I took it away from your predecessor. 14I will set him over my house and my kingdom forever; his throne will be established forever.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 15Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation.</div><div class="s1">David&#8217;s Prayer</div><div class="p"> 16Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said:</div><div class="pm">&#8220;Who am I, Lord God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? 17And as if this were not enough in your sight, my God, you have spoken about the future of the house of your servant. You, Lord God, have looked on me as though I were the most exalted of men.</div><div class="pm"> 18&#8220;What more can David say to you for honoring your servant? For you know your servant, 19Lord. For the sake of your servant and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made known all these great promises.</div><div class="pm"> 20&#8220;There is no one like you, Lord, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears. 21And who is like your people Israel&#8212;the one nation on earth whose God went out to redeem a people for himself, and to make a name for yourself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt? 22You made your people Israel your very own forever, and you, Lord, have become their God.</div><div class="pm"> 23&#8220;And now, Lord, let the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house be established forever. Do as you promised, 24so that it will be established and that your name will be great forever. Then people will say, &#8216;The Lord Almighty, the God over Israel, is Israel&#8217;s God!&#8217; And the house of your servant David will be established before you.</div><div class="pm"> 25&#8220;You, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for him. So your servant has found courage to pray to you. 26You, Lord, are God! You have promised these good things to your servant. 27Now you have been pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight; for you, Lord, have blessed it, and it will be blessed forever.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">18</div><div class="s1">David&#8217;s Victories</div><div class="p"> 1In the course of time, David defeated the Philistines and subdued them, and he took Gath and its surrounding villages from the control of the Philistines.</div><div class="p"> 2David also defeated the Moabites, and they became subject to him and brought him tribute.</div><div class="p"> 3Moreover, David defeated Hadadezer king of Zobah, in the vicinity of Hamath, when he went to set up his monument at#18:3 Or to restore his control over the Euphrates River. 4David captured a thousand of his chariots, seven thousand charioteers and twenty thousand foot soldiers. He hamstrung all but a hundred of the chariot horses.</div><div class="p"> 5When the Arameans of Damascus came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David struck down twenty-two thousand of them. 6He put garrisons in the Aramean kingdom of Damascus, and the Arameans became subject to him and brought him tribute. The Lord gave David victory wherever he went.</div><div class="p"> 7David took the gold shields carried by the officers of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem. 8From Tebah#18:8 Hebrew Tibhath, a variant of Tebah and Kun, towns that belonged to Hadadezer, David took a great quantity of bronze, which Solomon used to make the bronze Sea, the pillars and various bronze articles.</div><div class="p"> 9When Tou king of Hamath heard that David had defeated the entire army of Hadadezer king of Zobah, 10he sent his son Hadoram to King David to greet him and congratulate him on his victory in battle over Hadadezer, who had been at war with Tou. Hadoram brought all kinds of articles of gold, of silver and of bronze.</div><div class="p"> 11King David dedicated these articles to the Lord, as he had done with the silver and gold he had taken from all these nations: Edom and Moab, the Ammonites and the Philistines, and Amalek.</div><div class="p"> 12Abishai son of Zeruiah struck down eighteen thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt. 13He put garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites became subject to David. The Lord gave David victory wherever he went.</div><div class="s1">David&#8217;s Officials</div><div class="p"> 14David reigned over all Israel, doing what was just and right for all his people. 15Joab son of Zeruiah was over the army; Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was recorder; 16Zadok son of Ahitub and Ahimelek#18:16 Some Hebrew manuscripts, Vulgate and Syriac (see also 2 Samuel 8:17); most Hebrew manuscripts Abimelek son of Abiathar were priests; Shavsha was secretary; 17Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Kerethites and Pelethites; and David&#8217;s sons were chief officials at the king&#8217;s side.</div>

 <div class="label">19</div><div class="s1">David Defeats the Ammonites</div><div class="p"> 1In the course of time, Nahash king of the Ammonites died, and his son succeeded him as king. 2David thought, &#8220;I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me.&#8221; So David sent a delegation to express his sympathy to Hanun concerning his father.</div><div class="p">When David&#8217;s envoys came to Hanun in the land of the Ammonites to express sympathy to him, 3the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun, &#8220;Do you think David is honoring your father by sending envoys to you to express sympathy? Haven&#8217;t his envoys come to you only to explore and spy out the country and overthrow it?&#8221; 4So Hanun seized David&#8217;s envoys, shaved them, cut off their garments at the buttocks, and sent them away.</div><div class="p"> 5When someone came and told David about the men, he sent messengers to meet them, for they were greatly humiliated. The king said, &#8220;Stay at Jericho till your beards have grown, and then come back.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 6When the Ammonites realized that they had become obnoxious to David, Hanun and the Ammonites sent a thousand talents#19:6 That is, about 38 tons or about 34 metric tons of silver to hire chariots and charioteers from Aram Naharaim,#19:6 That is, Northwest Mesopotamia Aram Maakah and Zobah. 7They hired thirty-two thousand chariots and charioteers, as well as the king of Maakah with his troops, who came and camped near Medeba, while the Ammonites were mustered from their towns and moved out for battle.</div><div class="p"> 8On hearing this, David sent Joab out with the entire army of fighting men. 9The Ammonites came out and drew up in battle formation at the entrance to their city, while the kings who had come were by themselves in the open country.</div><div class="p"> 10Joab saw that there were battle lines in front of him and behind him; so he selected some of the best troops in Israel and deployed them against the Arameans. 11He put the rest of the men under the command of Abishai his brother, and they were deployed against the Ammonites. 12Joab said, &#8220;If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you are to rescue me; but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will rescue you. 13Be strong, and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. The Lord will do what is good in his sight.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 14Then Joab and the troops with him advanced to fight the Arameans, and they fled before him. 15When the Ammonites realized that the Arameans were fleeing, they too fled before his brother Abishai and went inside the city. So Joab went back to Jerusalem.</div><div class="p"> 16After the Arameans saw that they had been routed by Israel, they sent messengers and had Arameans brought from beyond the Euphrates River, with Shophak the commander of Hadadezer&#8217;s army leading them.</div><div class="p"> 17When David was told of this, he gathered all Israel and crossed the Jordan; he advanced against them and formed his battle lines opposite them. David formed his lines to meet the Arameans in battle, and they fought against him. 18But they fled before Israel, and David killed seven thousand of their charioteers and forty thousand of their foot soldiers. He also killed Shophak the commander of their army.</div><div class="p"> 19When the vassals of Hadadezer saw that they had been routed by Israel, they made peace with David and became subject to him.</div><div class="p">So the Arameans were not willing to help the Ammonites anymore.</div>

 <div class="label">20</div><div class="s1">The Capture of Rabbah</div><div class="p"> 1In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war, Joab led out the armed forces. He laid waste the land of the Ammonites and went to Rabbah and besieged it, but David remained in Jerusalem. Joab attacked Rabbah and left it in ruins. 2David took the crown from the head of their king#20:2 Or of Milkom, that is, Molek&#8212;its weight was found to be a talent#20:2 That is, about 75 pounds or about 34 kilograms of gold, and it was set with precious stones&#8212;and it was placed on David&#8217;s head. He took a great quantity of plunder from the city 3and brought out the people who were there, consigning them to labor with saws and with iron picks and axes. David did this to all the Ammonite towns. Then David and his entire army returned to Jerusalem.</div><div class="s1">War With the Philistines</div><div class="p"> 4In the course of time, war broke out with the Philistines, at Gezer. At that time Sibbekai the Hushathite killed Sippai, one of the descendants of the Rephaites, and the Philistines were subjugated.</div><div class="p"> 5In another battle with the Philistines, Elhanan son of Jair killed Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, who had a spear with a shaft like a weaver&#8217;s rod.</div><div class="p"> 6In still another battle, which took place at Gath, there was a huge man with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot&#8212;twenty-four in all. He also was descended from Rapha. 7When he taunted Israel, Jonathan son of Shimea, David&#8217;s brother, killed him.</div><div class="p"> 8These were descendants of Rapha in Gath, and they fell at the hands of David and his men.</div>
