Am I Enough: Embracing The Truth About Who You Are

DAY 5 OF 10

Lie #5: Numbers Are the Judge of Beauty

Obsession with my weight has been front and center when I’ve wrestled with my insecurity and was not healthy physically or emotionally. This experience taught me two things: embracing God’s love is more important than becoming a size 0, and that we as women tend to find more worth in what the scale tells us than what Scripture tells us. God’s Word says you are altogether beautiful. The scale tells you that you have more pounds to shed. Scripture says to stop focusing on the world. The world says you can become more beautiful. God says He created you in His image—and that is enough.

I hope you’ll accept this challenge: stop focusing on your physical looks more than your internal look. Feed yourself the fruit of the Spirit. Fill up on Scripture. Focus on having arms that serve God and others. Work on developing a stomach filled with healthy food and belly laughs. Have legs that dance with the Lord and follow where He leads. Yes, go ahead and eat fresh fruit, go for a long run, and do your squats. But never, ever let the scale determine your sense of worth. That number on your scale is just that—a number—but your relationship with Christ is your destiny.

I used to compare myself to different girls, wanting to be them. I found out that they also struggled with feeling not “enough.” Comparison is the thief of joy because it tends to highlight others’ best moments while reminding you of your worst. Let’s be real. If we sit down and really talk with those whom we assume have it all together, we’ll see they are broken and flawed just like us.

Are you going to spend your life striving to be like every girl you stalk on social media? Or are you going to chase your Savior who holds the ultimate prize—eternity—by His side? If you chase Jesus, you will realize that although you are not enough for the world, you are enough for your Savior. If you chase Jesus, you will realize that your worth comes from belonging to Him.

Are you looking for a diet that will restore your self-worth? The best diet I can recommend calls for the removal of these things in your life: (1) the guy who makes you feel worthless; (2) your competitiveness with other girls; (3) your desire for a guy in your life; (4) thinking a good body will fix everything; and (5) the friend who is not really a friend. Be intentional to surround yourself with people who point you to Christ, not cause you to stray. Joy is contagious, but so is sin. Love yourself enough to spend time with friends who push you to walk with Jesus, strive to be a better person each day, and live a life that builds people up instead of tearing them down.

Respond

What insecurities do you have from comparing yourself to the world’s standards of beauty? How is God’s image of you different from the world’s?

Where do you need to follow the diet described above? List specific people, activities, or habits you need to deal with to follow this diet.

Who else can benefit from the freedom you have as God’s beloved daughter?
