Expect The Extraordinary

DAY 5 OF 25

Expect unity

Christmas celebrations vary across the world. There are lots of differences in the traditions we have and the food we eat; but the shared wonder and amazement of the gift of Jesus unites many of us at this time of year.

Isaac, who works in Tearfund’s Bangladesh team, shares some of the ways that Bangladeshi Christians celebrate Christmas. See what you think about the similarities and differences to western Christmas traditions…

“Bangladeshi Christians typically have two church services: one at midnight on Christmas Eve and one at 7am on Christmas Day. It is common in Bangladesh to visit families in your community for breakfast after the Christmas morning service. It wouldn’t be a surprise if your pastor, church members, or even people from neighboring communities turned up unannounced at your house.”

How does this differ from the way you celebrate Christmas?

There might be lots of differences between a western and Bangladeshi Christmas, but remember, even our Christmas celebrations will be a pale comparison to the celebration we're invited to when God's kingdom is finally and fully revealed. This Advent, give thanks for the rich diversity of culture and traditions across the world.
