 <div class="label">7</div><div class="p"> 1The Lord then said to Noah, &#8220;Go into the ark, you and your whole family, because I have found you righteous in this generation. 2Take with you seven pairs of every kind of clean animal, a male and its mate, and one pair of every kind of unclean animal, a male and its mate, 3and also seven pairs of every kind of bird, male and female, to keep their various kinds alive throughout the earth. 4Seven days from now I will send rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights, and I will wipe from the face of the earth every living creature I have made.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 5And Noah did all that the Lord commanded him.</div><div class="p"> 6Noah was six hundred years old when the floodwaters came on the earth. 7And Noah and his sons and his wife and his sons&#8217; wives entered the ark to escape the waters of the flood. 8Pairs of clean and unclean animals, of birds and of all creatures that move along the ground, 9male and female, came to Noah and entered the ark, as God had commanded Noah. 10And after the seven days the floodwaters came on the earth.</div><div class="p"> 11In the six hundredth year of Noah&#8217;s life, on the seventeenth day of the second month&#8212;on that day all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened. 12And rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights.</div><div class="p"> 13On that very day Noah and his sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth, together with his wife and the wives of his three sons, entered the ark. 14They had with them every wild animal according to its kind, all livestock according to their kinds, every creature that moves along the ground according to its kind and every bird according to its kind, everything with wings. 15Pairs of all creatures that have the breath of life in them came to Noah and entered the ark. 16The animals going in were male and female of every living thing, as God had commanded Noah. Then the Lord shut him in.</div><div class="p"> 17For forty days the flood kept coming on the earth, and as the waters increased they lifted the ark high above the earth. 18The waters rose and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on the surface of the water. 19They rose greatly on the earth, and all the high mountains under the entire heavens were covered. 20The waters rose and covered the mountains to a depth of more than fifteen cubits.#7:20 That is, about 23 feet or about 6.8 meters#7:20 Or rose more than fifteen cubits, and the mountains were covered 21Every living thing that moved on land perished&#8212;birds, livestock, wild animals, all the creatures that swarm over the earth, and all mankind. 22Everything on dry land that had the breath of life in its nostrils died. 23Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out; people and animals and the creatures that move along the ground and the birds were wiped from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those with him in the ark.</div><div class="p"> 24The waters flooded the earth for a hundred and fifty days.</div>

 <div class="label">8</div><div class="p"> 1But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and the livestock that were with him in the ark, and he sent a wind over the earth, and the waters receded. 2Now the springs of the deep and the floodgates of the heavens had been closed, and the rain had stopped falling from the sky. 3The water receded steadily from the earth. At the end of the hundred and fifty days the water had gone down, 4and on the seventeenth day of the seventh month the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. 5The waters continued to recede until the tenth month, and on the first day of the tenth month the tops of the mountains became visible.</div><div class="p"> 6After forty days Noah opened a window he had made in the ark 7and sent out a raven, and it kept flying back and forth until the water had dried up from the earth. 8Then he sent out a dove to see if the water had receded from the surface of the ground. 9But the dove could find nowhere to perch because there was water over all the surface of the earth; so it returned to Noah in the ark. He reached out his hand and took the dove and brought it back to himself in the ark. 10He waited seven more days and again sent out the dove from the ark. 11When the dove returned to him in the evening, there in its beak was a freshly plucked olive leaf! Then Noah knew that the water had receded from the earth. 12He waited seven more days and sent the dove out again, but this time it did not return to him.</div><div class="p"> 13By the first day of the first month of Noah&#8217;s six hundred and first year, the water had dried up from the earth. Noah then removed the covering from the ark and saw that the surface of the ground was dry. 14By the twenty-seventh day of the second month the earth was completely dry.</div><div class="p"> 15Then God said to Noah, 16&#8220;Come out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons and their wives. 17Bring out every kind of living creature that is with you&#8212;the birds, the animals, and all the creatures that move along the ground&#8212;so they can multiply on the earth and be fruitful and increase in number on it.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 18So Noah came out, together with his sons and his wife and his sons&#8217; wives. 19All the animals and all the creatures that move along the ground and all the birds&#8212;everything that moves on land&#8212;came out of the ark, one kind after another.</div><div class="p"> 20Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings on it. 21The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: &#8220;Never again will I curse the ground because of humans, even though#8:21 Or humans, for every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done.</div><div class="q1"> 22&#8220;As long as the earth endures,</div><div class="q1">seedtime and harvest,</div><div class="q1">cold and heat,</div><div class="q1">summer and winter,</div><div class="q1">day and night</div><div class="q1">will never cease.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">4</div><div class="s1">Eliphaz</div><div class="p"> 1Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:</div><div class="q1"> 2&#8220;If someone ventures a word with you, will you be impatient?</div><div class="q2">But who can keep from speaking?</div><div class="q1"> 3Think how you have instructed many,</div><div class="q2">how you have strengthened feeble hands.</div><div class="q1"> 4Your words have supported those who stumbled;</div><div class="q2">you have strengthened faltering knees.</div><div class="q1"> 5But now trouble comes to you, and you are discouraged;</div><div class="q2">it strikes you, and you are dismayed.</div><div class="q1"> 6Should not your piety be your confidence</div><div class="q2">and your blameless ways your hope?</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 7&#8220;Consider now: Who, being innocent, has ever perished?</div><div class="q2">Where were the upright ever destroyed?</div><div class="q1"> 8As I have observed, those who plow evil</div><div class="q2">and those who sow trouble reap it.</div><div class="q1"> 9At the breath of God they perish;</div><div class="q2">at the blast of his anger they are no more.</div><div class="q1"> 10The lions may roar and growl,</div><div class="q2">yet the teeth of the great lions are broken.</div><div class="q1"> 11The lion perishes for lack of prey,</div><div class="q2">and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 12&#8220;A word was secretly brought to me,</div><div class="q2">my ears caught a whisper of it.</div><div class="q1"> 13Amid disquieting dreams in the night,</div><div class="q2">when deep sleep falls on people,</div><div class="q1"> 14fear and trembling seized me</div><div class="q2">and made all my bones shake.</div><div class="q1"> 15A spirit glided past my face,</div><div class="q2">and the hair on my body stood on end.</div><div class="q1"> 16It stopped,</div><div class="q2">but I could not tell what it was.</div><div class="q1">A form stood before my eyes,</div><div class="q2">and I heard a hushed voice:</div><div class="q1"> 17&#8216;Can a mortal be more righteous than God?</div><div class="q2">Can even a strong man be more pure than his Maker?</div><div class="q1"> 18If God places no trust in his servants,</div><div class="q2">if he charges his angels with error,</div><div class="q1"> 19how much more those who live in houses of clay,</div><div class="q2">whose foundations are in the dust,</div><div class="q2">who are crushed more readily than a moth!</div><div class="q1"> 20Between dawn and dusk they are broken to pieces;</div><div class="q2">unnoticed, they perish forever.</div><div class="q1"> 21Are not the cords of their tent pulled up,</div><div class="q2">so that they die without wisdom?&#8217;</div><div class="b"></div>

 <div class="label">3</div><div class="s1">Jesus Heals on the Sabbath</div><div class="p"> 1Another time Jesus went into the synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there. 2Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath. 3Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, &#8220;Stand up in front of everyone.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 4Then Jesus asked them, &#8220;Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?&#8221; But they remained silent.</div><div class="p"> 5He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, &#8220;Stretch out your hand.&#8221; He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored. 6Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus.</div><div class="s1">Crowds Follow Jesus</div><div class="p"> 7Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the lake, and a large crowd from Galilee followed. 8When they heard about all he was doing, many people came to him from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, and the regions across the Jordan and around Tyre and Sidon. 9Because of the crowd he told his disciples to have a small boat ready for him, to keep the people from crowding him. 10For he had healed many, so that those with diseases were pushing forward to touch him. 11Whenever the impure spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, &#8220;You are the Son of God.&#8221; 12But he gave them strict orders not to tell others about him.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Appoints the Twelve</div><div class="p"> 13Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. 14He appointed twelve#3:14 Some manuscripts twelve&#8212;designating them apostles&#8212; that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach 15and to have authority to drive out demons. 16These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter), 17James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means &#8220;sons of thunder&#8221;), 18Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot 19and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Accused by His Family and by Teachers of the Law</div><div class="p"> 20Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered, so that he and his disciples were not even able to eat. 21When his family#3:21 Or his associates heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, &#8220;He is out of his mind.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 22And the teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem said, &#8220;He is possessed by Beelzebul! By the prince of demons he is driving out demons.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 23So Jesus called them over to him and began to speak to them in parables: &#8220;How can Satan drive out Satan? 24If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. 26And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand; his end has come. 27In fact, no one can enter a strong man&#8217;s house without first tying him up. Then he can plunder the strong man&#8217;s house. 28Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter, 29but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 30He said this because they were saying, &#8220;He has an impure spirit.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 31Then Jesus&#8217; mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him. 32A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, &#8220;Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 33 &#8220;Who are my mother and my brothers?&#8221; he asked.</div><div class="p"> 34Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, &#8220;Here are my mother and my brothers! 35Whoever does God&#8217;s will is my brother and sister and mother.&#8221;</div>
