Tony Evans Teaches On Bibliology

DAY 2 OF 5

There’s a very popular icebreaker game where people will take turns making three claims about themselves. Two of the claims are true, and one is false. Everybody else participating in the game will try to guess which claims are true and which one isn’t. As a result, you inevitably learn something new about the other people playing the game.

Unfortunately, many people approach the Bible in the same way. They view it as a bunch of claims. Some are true, but others are false, and you have to spend time figuring out which are which. The problem with this approach is that you have a presupposition that there are false claims in the Bible. This is simply not true.

The Bible is inerrant. Inerrancy means that God’s Word forms an absolutely fixed, firm foundation of truth. It’s a theological term meaning that the Bible is without error. In other words, the Bible is absolutely trustworthy. Simply put, the Bible is truth. It doesn’t just contain claims that are true, but it is actually truth in and of itself.

But how can we know that Scripture is inerrant? First, the Bible is consistent. There are sixty-six books, written by forty different authors, covering over 1,500 years and written in three different languages. Yet, there is one Bible, telling one story, about one God and presenting one message. Secondly, the Bible contains 1,800-2,500 prophecies, many which have been fulfilled, and the rest are awaiting fulfillment. Thirdly, archeological evidence provides historical reliability. For example, about 25,000 sites mentioned in the Old Testament have been located. Fourthly, non-biblical historians verify events of the Bible. These secular historians deny the spiritual lessons of the events, but they don’t deny that the events actually took place. Finally, the most important reason we can know Scripture is inerrant is because it claims to be. It testifies to its own truthfulness. And since the Bible is the Word of God, and God cannot lie, then we can trust its claims.

How does Biblical inerrancy provide you with comfort and hope?
