DAY 3 OF 7

God Makes a Covenant with Abraham

Genesis 3–11 is a downward spiral of humankind’s sin where we see the devastating and far-reaching effects of the rebellion that began in Eden. This culminated in the judgment of Babylon and the shattering and scattering of humanity throughout the earth.

Though humanity was now divided, hope remained for a rescue from sin, and this hope was communicated next through, of all things, a genealogy introducing us to another character in the unfolding drama of Scripture—Abram.

Very little is known about Abram’s early life. He and his wife, Sarai, were childless (Gen. 11:30). He may have been a shepherd, and he was from the city of Ur (vv. 28,31). But God called this obscure man to be a pivotal piece in His plan of redemption, the first piece in reversing the curse of Babylon, for God planned to bless him and his descendants in a unique way.

God called Abram to leave all he knew and go to a new place He would eventually reveal to him. Abram demonstrated faith by responding positively, though he didn’t know the specifics of God’s call. God’s plan was to make a covenant with Abram and use him as a vessel through whom He would bless all the nations of the earth.

Not only would God bless Abram in tangible form but the entire world would also be blessed through him as the father of the Jewish people, through whom would come his descendant Jesus.

About this Plan

Gospel Foundations

In volume 1 of Gospel Foundations – The God Who Creates , you will explore what happened “in the beginning” as God laid the foundation of the earth and then established a path for the redemption of His people through His covenant with Abraham. This study shows God’s good purpose in creation, specifically by positioning humankind to bear His image and glorify Him through our rule over creation, our relationships with Him and one another, and our work and service for Him.
