The core of the gospel is love. This is what John makes abundantly clear in his first letter. God is love. Christians ought to love one another. And love is much more than feeling, it also requires action. Even if someone claims to love but does not exemplify such love, that person is a liar and Christ is not in him. Love is the willingness to lay one’s life down for another, to have compassion for others, and to see what ought to be done for others and acting on it.
The beauty of John’s letter is that we get a crystal clear picture of what it means to follow Jesus—we must walk as He did. The command is not to love in concept only, but in how we act, what we do for others, and how we treat each other. We walk in truth when we walk in love.
Loving God and loving others are not two separate things. We love God by loving others. The word compassion originates from the Latin word compati, com – “together” and pati – “suffer,” or “to suffer together.” Whenever we show compassion towards others, we show compassion to Jesus. However, the opposite is also true, that when we deny compassion towards others, we also deny compassion towards Him (Matthew 25:41-45).

About this Plan

Because ignoring the great commission is not an option. Jesus left us with the great responsibility to go and make disciples, to be witnesses, and to be his hands and feet in this world. Don’t leave something so important to chance. This reading plan is created to help you make disciples who make disciples. Use this reading plan along with the Awana Journey Bible Study book entitled Witnesses.
