Discontentment Destroys
Contentment is described as a state of happiness and satisfaction. Feeling satisfied, fulfilled, gratified and cheerful. Having ease of mind.
It sounds rather blissful, doesn’t it? Maybe a bit surreal?
Unfortunately, many of us don’t often experience this type of existence on a consistent, daily basis. We may have moments of contentment, but we would be hard pressed to describe our life as one of ongoing serenity and satisfaction.
Yet God calls us to be content in all circumstances; we should always be content, all the time. Clearly ‘should’ doesn’t necessarily always reflect reality.
The good news is that we have a large degree of control over our own contentment. While we may not be capable of changing certain circumstances or particulars, how we view, process, and handle situations can make a wonderfully positive impact. Here are six helpful tips for ‘dissing discontentment’:
(1) Practicing an attitude of gratitude can make all the difference. Try replacing “I hope” for something you desire, as opposed to thinking “I want.”
(2) Consider the moments when you felt most content and orchestrate more of those when possible.
(3) Develop a true appreciation for what you already have and acknowledge that it’s probably more than most will ever know.
(4) Delight in your blessings instead of always longing for more.
(5) Work on the glass being half full. Or more than half!
(6) Seek God for strength and guidance. Remember that everything you need and all you should want are in Christ Jesus anyway, so why look elsewhere?
What will you declutter? Discontentment, of course! Feelings of anger, frustration, disappointment, unhappiness, jealousy, and displeasure, as well as wasting precious moments of the life God blessed you with.
