Chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream takes different delightful components and puts them together to form a delicious flavor. Because really, who doesn’t love the combination of cookies and ice cream?! 

What’s the perfect complement to the truths of God’s Word? His Spirit! While some parts of Scripture, like the Gospels, are pretty straightforward, others can be hard to understand. Sometimes what makes the Word “bland” to us is simply not getting what it’s saying. We need the Spirit to reveal the meaning to us, teach us things we never saw before and help us to recall Scripture at critical times.

The Holy Spirit is not only our guide to know truth. He reveals the things to come: “When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what He has heard. He will tell you about the future” (John 16:13, NLT). He knows God’s plan for you and for all of mankind—He can reveal it through the Word and through speaking to your heart.

The Spirit also helps you to apply what you’ve read: “And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules” (Ezekiel 36:27, ESV). It’s pretty amazing to realize that the same Spirit that reveals truth to you can also empower you to live it out!

 Points to Ponder: 

• What’s one passage or book of the Bible that got you “stuck” because you couldn’t understand it?
• As a Christian, God’s Spirit dwells inside you. Have you asked for truth to be revealed as you read the Word?
• Look up verses that talk about the Holy Spirit. Ask God to make your heart open to the Spirit’s leading and life-changing power.
