“Surely God knew that his daughters and sons would wrestle with what was to be their purpose in life, as evidenced by plentiful passages in Scripture on the subject …”

devotional direction

Many factors tend to play into the way our plans get made. School schedules play a role. As do vacation days on hand. We consider appointments already on the books, chores that need to get done, family and friends we’ve agreed to connect with, and downtime that’s calling our name. If there’s a financial cost associated with a given commitment, we throw that in the mix too. Same goes for time and emotions: What will this ‘yes’ cost me? the wise one is prone to ask.

Curiously, this verse in Proverbs seems to trump all those factors and more. It’s not our strategy, our scrutiny, or our savvy that prevails, but the Lord’s purpose that wins the day. And yet: how often do we stop in the midst of our planning, look heavenward, and think to check in?

“God? What is your purpose for me today? This week? This month? This year?”

Were we to sit quietly upon asking such questions, what do you think would be his response?

The Lord comes near to us, Scripture promises, whenever we choose to come near to him. Perhaps today will be a day when we are led by his will and not ours.

About this Plan

The Stories We Tell: 28 Days Of Truth-Telling For The Soul

Based on the "The Stories We Tell: Real Women. Real Lives. Real Love" Church Edition.  This twenty-eight-day devotional experience has been created for you to, in effect, think more carefully about what you’re thinking—about who you are and why you’re here and the role God longs for you to play in impacting the world around you for good. Consider carving out ten or fifteen minutes each day for twenty-eight days, during your first waking hours, perhaps, or just before you close your day and head to bed.
