What Does Worship Look Like?

DAY 2 OF 4

Bowing Down

As Mary honored her Lord, she was a picture of absolute humility. Scripture describes Jesus as reclining at the dinner table, a common mealtime position in ancient middle eastern culture. Mary had to kneel in order to anoint Jesus' head and feet and to wipe away the fragrant oil. She knelt as a household servant would have knelt.

She chose to use her own hair to clean the oil from Jesus' feet. In biblical times, a woman's hair was rarely viewed in public. The apostle Paul even referred to a woman's hair as “her glory”. Yet, Mary used her unbound hair to wipe Jesus' feet. Generally, this demeaning task of cleaning the feet of an honored guest was left to slaves. But Mary used her glory—her best—to clean the most lowly part of Jesus.

Our pride can keep us from worshiping Jesus as He deserves to be worshipped. Our pride would rather be served than to serve and is concerned with how we look at all times. In the presence of the King of Kings, Mary chose to lay aside her pride and bow at His feet in adoration.

Will we humble ourselves so we can worship Jesus or will we allow our pride to keep us from giving God what He deserves?
