What Would Jesus Undo? Hollow Worship
Is it just me, or does it seem like to-do lists only grow? Like you’ve barely put away the dishes before it’s time to do it all again? Like every “small” project at work actually has 10 more “small” (yet essential) tasks attached? Like you can barely escape your list long enough to catch a few hours of sleep—let alone to find time for God?
I do this. I allow my busyness to come before God, claiming all the while to worship Him. The thing is, God wants to be first. Do you put anything before Him?
So many more times than I’d ever like to admit, I’ve ignored God to focus on my own problems, while still singing and praying that He’d make my solutions work.
But then I realized what my actions were communicating to God—You get my leftover, tired, demanding, distracted, and hollow worship.
When I let my job (which happens to be leading worship), relationships, chores, errands, or anything else get my first and my best, I’m no longer giving God His place in my life.
Hollow worship, like hypocrisy, often starts slow. Maybe like me, you never intended to dishonor God by trying to squeeze Him into your day.
I want to worship God with my whole life, not just with my singing. I want my worship to be the driving force behind my life, not something I crowd out with busy work. So I began to seek God first thing in the morning and before making decisions. Before I get in my car to drive anywhere, I simply invite God into every part of my daily life.
Honestly, I thought I’d run out of time for all the to-dos, but I’ve been surprised. I have more focus and energy to get the right things done, not separate from my worship, but as part of it.

Pray: Jesus, because of You, I’m done with hollow worship.
