The Good Portion : Scripture

DAY 9 OF 10

The Voice of God

The Bible is enough. The Scriptures contain every word we need for knowing the way of salvation and living a God-glorifying life.

C.H. Spurgeon suffered from chronic pain and ill health. His precious wife was an invalid, and to make matters worse, he was routinely unjustly criticized and attacked. He was a man who was familiar with suffering; and yet, here is what he said about the Bible:

Believer! There is enough in the Bible for you to lie upon forever. If you should outnumber the years of Methuselah [He lived 969 years!], there would be no need for a fresh revelation; if you should live until Christ should return to the earth, there would be no necessity for the addition of a single word; if you should go down as deep as Jonah, or even descend as David said he did, into the depths of hell, still there would be enough in the Bible to comfort you without a supplementary sentence.

Spurgeon knew that all that the believer needs is in the Bible. We don’t need a more personal message to feel closer to Jesus. He speaks directly to us in His Word. We don’t need secrets uncovered. God has revealed Himself in the Bible. God has given us everything we need in the Scriptures to know how to think and live in ways that please Him and give us joy. Nothing need be added, and no other writings rival the Scriptures. We can be content with what God has told us in the Bible.

Do you need direction in life? Are you searching for true joy? Don’t struggle through life, wondering what God is saying and doing, while your Bible—God’s Word to you—sits closed on your shelf. Pull it out, open it up, and hear the very voice of God! Don’t you want the joy of hearing directly from God?

About this Plan

The Good Portion : Scripture

As women in the modern world we often juggle the responsibilities of work and school and home. Sometimes life is overwhelming and sometimes it is just mundane. But the God who sent His Son into the world to rescue sinners gives meaning to both the overwhelming and the mundane. He created us to enjoy knowing Him. In knowing God through the Scriptures we find meaning and joy!
