Devotions for the Hungry Heart

DAY 5 OF 6

Title: A Hungry Heart is Needy

Devotional Content:

I have a question for you today, but you may want to hear me out before you raise your hand. Are you an overcomer?

I’m pretty sure every believer wants to be. It’s one of the promises we like to stand on, isn’t it? Finding scripture and verse for such a life is easy enough. One of them is found in 1 John 5:5: “Who is the one who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?”

By definition, to “overcome” means to endure, to get the better of, to conquer. As believers, we understand that Jesus got the victory over this world and is the Prince of it. And, as hard as it is for us to believe, we gladly accept the truth that His triumph is ours to share. Awesome, right? Yippee skippy! Color us overcomers! Except so many of us aren’t.

Ouch.

What we are is needy. And if we are ever to become overcomers, we must understand just how needy we are.

Consider the definitions of the word overcome. It means to be seized, grasped, and to have prevailed. Those definitions beg questions of us all. Have we been overcome by a worship song or a hymn here and there? Have we been taken by a verse from time to time? Or has the Son of God truly overcome us?

We sorely need Jesus to seize our stubborn wills, grasp our “this is my life” mentalities, and prevail over our to-do lists. For we won’t be overcomers until we are overcome.

Overcome me, Lord Jesus. Start here.

For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world— our faith. 1 JOHN 5:4 NKJV

About this Plan

Devotions for the Hungry Heart

God promises to satisfy those who hunger for Him. Sadly, we often prefer magazines and me time. Can we really learn to feast our hungry selves on the eternal when the temporal is so demanding? Shellie Rushing Tomlinson says we can. She’s here with Devotions For The Hungry Heart, simple stories, grounded in Scripture and framed around six God honoring traits to walk readers into an ever-increasing appetite for Jesus.
