How Do We Know God Exists? (part 2)
There will never be enough physical answers to satisfy every skeptic concerning the question of God’s existence. But that does not mean there is no evidence. In fact, there is so much evidence that it is difficult to dismiss… and it does not end with the complexity of the universe that seemingly calls for the existence of an intelligent designer. It also includes us ourselves and the way our societies interact.
There is evidence for God in the fact that there is a moral code that transcends culture, defining human relationships throughout history. In most societies, people seem to instinctively understand certain boundaries—moral laws governing the way we interact with each other. Concepts like: “don’t murder.” “Don’t cheat on your wife.” These are interwoven into human existence. Even when we attempt to reject these principles, someone knows that something is wrong. We call it “crime.” In other words, the principles still remain.
Why is it that people have this morality governing them, rather than having nothing at all to live by? Where does this come from? Signs point to a creator God, the source of our concept of right and wrong.
In your life, the strongest case for God’s existence will come from personal experience with him. Don’t get this backward—you can have experiences that are not accurate. Asking these questions is kind of like asking how we know other people exist or how we know the ocean tides are flowing though we can’t see them.
Though it is sometimes easy to miss, God’s presence in our lives can be felt intuitively, like knowing other people exist. Felt through his impact on our lives, like seeing the tide carrying driftwood out to sea. You really don’t know until you meet him for yourself. The great news is that no matter what you’ve been told, you can actually meet him. So take the leap—if you’re questioning, go ahead and ask him… that’s the easiest way to find out if he exists or not.
