Eve

Genesis 3:6: "The woman [Eve] was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it."

Have you ever wanted something so much you actually believed a lie to get it? That's exactly what happened with Eve, the first woman God created. She wanted the wisdom the serpent told her she would receive if she ate the fruit. She believed the serpent, and not only ate of the fruit, but convinced her husband to eat it too. When they acted on this lie, their eyes were opened. They felt shame when they realized they were naked (Genesis 3:7).

There are always consequences to our actions, whether good or bad. And oh, boy, was this one a doozy! Eve's desire enticed Adam, who then blamed God for "the woman you gave me" (Genesis 3:12). This one person's act of disobedience (when she knew it was wrong) affects all of humanity to this very day.

When we read the Bible, we learn what God expects from us. He makes very clear what is sinful and what is not. On our own strength, it is very difficult not to give in to temptation, but we are told God is faithful and when we are tempted, he will show us a way out so that we can endure (1 Corinthians 10:13).

Though our decisions may not have the same results as Eve, which trickles down to all of humanity, they do impact those over whom we have influence. They watch and learn from us. If we live as unto the Lord, He will give us all we need to overcome the temptations that come our way.

Application:

Are there areas in your life where you haven’t listened to God’s instruction and later regretted it? If so, ask the Holy Spirit to show you how to submit to His instruction and guidance. He is a God of mercy and forgiveness and is willing to give you a fresh start. You need only ask.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your love and mercy. Keep me ever mindful of Your presence so that when temptations come my way, I will put my trust in You and quickly run in the opposite direction. Amen.
