Living in Increase (Part 8) - Increase in WorshipExemplo
Sing a New Song
Somewhere deep in my parents’ basement in a plastic bin is a bright yellow folder with the title “Emily’s Songs” written in thick black Sharpie.
When I was younger, I dreamed of being a singer/songwriter. I wrote songs constantly and filed them away in my yellow folder. Most of these songs were just a verse and chorus, sometimes with a bridge. While most of these songs never were completed or saw the light of day, they were special to me. They were my way of communicating my emotions and praising God.
Psalm 98:1-7 talks about worshipping God, and these verses will be our theme verses for the rest of the week. Today, we will cover Psalm 98:1-3, which talks about “singing a new song” to the Lord. What I loved about writing songs was that it was a way I worshipped God personally. You’ll most likely never see me on a stage leading worship on a Sunday morning. However, that doesn’t mean I’m not a worshipper, and that doesn’t mean I can’t sing a new song to the Lord.
When we talk about “singing a new song” to the Lord, it doesn’t mean you have to be in line for a Grammy. It means that whatever praise leaves your mouth when you worship God is unique to you. There’s nothing wrong with worshipping corporately, but worshipping at church on Sunday can’t be the only worship we experience. We must worship God every day!
I love how Psalm 98:1-3 ties worship and victory together. Throughout the Old Testament, we see countless kings and leaders sing songs of praise after winning a battle. These songs have been recorded as Scripture for us, and while they’re great to quote, we can also sing our own song when God shows up in a powerful way in our lives.
Maybe you’re not a writer or musically talented. If not, that’s okay! I’m not saying to write the next top hit; I’m saying to praise God in your own words for the victories you’ve seen in your life. Maybe these words are a song; perhaps they’re sentences you speak. Maybe these words are accompanied by music; maybe you whisper them in the silence of your own home. Whatever it looks like for you, worship God for the victories He’s brought to you by singing a new song to Him today!

Action Step: Think about a victory God has brought into your life (provision, protection, healing, etc.). Then, put in words what that means to you. Speak or sing those words to God in your personal time with Him!
