Letting Go of Control: Isabella’s Story

Since I was young, I’ve been a planner and a person who likes to be in control of my life. For many years, I had my future set out before me, day by day, month by month.

I became anxious and broke down when things didn’t go as planned. One birthday, I had a hangout at a beach rental, and suddenly, the power shut off. I was freaking out, but my friend told me we couldn’t control it, so we’d have to find a way to be flexible and still carry on the celebration. My friends quickly found a place in the city we could go to, and of course, the rest of the night ended up being great.

In college, I found Young Life and an awesome mentor. I learned that humans like to be in control because we’re individualistic and have free will. It’s comfortable to know we’re in control and believe we have the power to control things.

But we really can’t control everything; only God can. We also can’t always control what other people do that impacts us. Everything changes around and in our lives except for God—He always stays the same. I’ve also learned that unexpected things can be fun; God surprises me with great things I didn't plan.

Sometimes, things that get out of our control don’t always have a great ending. What if my birthday had been ruined? I’ve learned that it’s okay to be disappointed, and I try to seek what God wants me to learn and pray things go smoother next time. I also talk to people I trust about what I’m going through, and they help me let go of what I’m trying to control.

Of course, we still have to make plans—this is part of life. I ask God for wisdom and guidance in my planning, but I also ask Him to help me be flexible when things don’t go as planned. I try to remind myself that God knows what’s going on in my life and what will be, and has it figured out—He’s already there in the future. I trust God to fill in the blanks, details, and unexpected.

Pray Over Your Story

Praise – Thank God for creating you as you are and for this time in history. Thank Him for always being in control of your life.

Repent – Confess areas of your life when you’ve tried to take control.

Ask – Ask God to help guide you and give you wisdom in your planning. Ask for help to be flexible when the unexpected happens.

Yield—Surrender this area to God. Spend a few moments listening for anything He may have to say.
