Daily Bible Reading— October 2024, God’s Guiding Word: Justice and PeaceExemplo
October 23
Introduction
Amos 1:1–15: Today we begin reading from the book of the prophet Amos. Amos was from a town in Judah (in the southern kingdom), but he was called to preach to the people in the northern kingdom of Israel during the middle of the eighth century B.C. It was a time of great prosperity, but Amos saw that prosperity was limited to the wealthy and that the poor were victims of injustice and oppression. Today’s reading begins with God’s judgment on Israel’s neighbors.
Today’s Key Verse: Amos 1:2a
Amos said, “The LORD roars from Mount Zion; his voice thunders from Jerusalem.”
Reflect
What sins have the various nations committed? How are they to be punished? What instances of injustice are you aware of in our world today? How are such injustices being addressed?
Pray
Loving God, open my heart and my eyes to the needs of those suffering under the yoke of oppression. Help me to work for justice and peace and to be a beacon of hope to those who need to hear of your saving love. Amen.
Tomorrow’s Reading
Amos 2:1–16: The prophet proclaims God’s judgment on Israel.
