Who Am I?

I want to finish our time together by giving you a short list of Biblical exhortations to consider as you think about how to address digital media, social media, and the metaverse for the Glory of God in your life.

  1. Our highest dignity and greatest joy are found in the Identity we have received from God; no digitally cultivated identity can ever come close. As 1 Corinthians 4 urges, keep your eyes fixed on what God says about you, not what others say about you.
  2. Cultivate beauty, truth, and wonder in what you say and do (Philippians 4:8). Use digital and social media to celebrate the beauty of God’s Creation, the presence of His common Grace, and the many evidences of His Goodness in the world around you.
  3. Think and pray before you speak, act, send, or post. As Proverbs 15:18 counsels, take time to consider your words and actions before you say or do anything on social media or digital applications like the metaverse. Harsh and hurtful words are a lot easier to express on digital or social media than in person. Avoid such language completely. This principle is straight from God’s Word, all over God’s Word.
  4. Conduct yourself honestly (Proverbs 16:2). Digital and social media can be used as a mask to present a false persona to others. Approach these technologies with a mindset that says, “Jesus must become greater; I must become less” (John 3:30).
  5. Do all to the Glory of God. So many opportunities exist to bring Glory to God through digital and social media and the metaverse in the days to come. So to paraphrase 1 Corinthians 10:31, “Whether you text, send, post, tweet, or whatever you do in the metaverse, do all to the Glory of God.”

We started ten days ago with the question, Who am I? What we’ve explored together since is that the defining characteristic of Humanity is the Image of God. It’s that you are made in the Image of God to experience life in God, and this reality will never, ever, ever change, no matter what happens in this world.

This means that all of Humanity’s efforts to reject, rebel against, compete with, or oppose God are ultimately weak and futile. God reigns Supreme over All. He is not worried or threatened by any of the issues or technological advancements we’ve considered. The whole Earth belongs to Him (Psalm 24:1) and all who are in it.

Don’t miss the sure hope that God gives us in His Word amidst our lives in this world. Humanity has been given the responsibility to steward all of Creation. As followers of Jesus, let’s do so on the foundation of God’s Word as we lead the way through the issues of our day.

Behind the question of how we as followers of Jesus should think about technological advancements like AI and the metaverse, or moral issues like abortion and sexuality, lies an even simpler question: Who am I? Who are we as human beings? How do we define and understand our humanity? Join Pastor David Platt for a ten-day look at the Bible’s answers and the implications for today’s most contentious debates.
