5 Assumptions About God And Why They Are WrongExemplo
Walking with God
Assumption: God Will Never Be Happy with Me
It happened in the blink of an eye. What I thought would be a cool parking lot exit after a high school soccer game quickly turned into an episode of embarrassing proportions. Instead of deftly navigating the parking lot by using the entrance only driveway as an exit as my teen brain envisioned, I ended up crashing into a pole and crushing a tire, disabling my car and stranding me there.
The last thing I wanted to do was call mom and tell her what happened because I knew she wouldn’t be happy and I was convinced at that age that my mom was never happy with me.
Was my mom never happy with me? No, of course not!
Did my mom love me more than I could understand and want the absolute best for me? Yes, of course she did!
It was my own rebellious decision that had gotten me where I was.
Looking back at that situation, I realize that I have done that same thing with God before. I have intentionally disobeyed him because I wanted to live my life the way that I wanted to. I thought God was boring, so I pursued my human desires which I thought would bring me the pleasure and fulfillment that my heart desired. And in the middle of all that, I blamed God for not being patient or happy with me. All of this left me asking the question, Why would I obey a God who is impossible to follow or please?
I quickly recognized the error in my heart. Just like going the wrong way, I wasn’t trying to listen to God or even attempting to obey him. So of course, following him would seem impossible. The problem is I thought walking with God was primarily about doing things. But it’s not. First and foremost, it starts with knowing and loving him.
Jesus tells us in John 14:15, “If you love me, you will keep my commands”. What a relief to realize that the key to keeping Jesus’ commands is loving and following him day after day. I don’t have to prove or earn anything. I just have to walk alongside, yoked with the one who loves me.
