Is Justice Possible? A 7-Day Devotional

Dia 5 de 7

Sure, Gentle, Perfect Justice

In a cherished part of his prophecy, Isaiah gives us four “servant songs” picturing the Messiah. Isaiah 42 is the first, and it is foundational to the other three. Representing the voice of God, Isaiah says of the Coming One, “Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him” (v. 1a).

As God’s chosen, Spirit-led leader, Christ will have a justice mission when He returns to earth. Isaiah emphasizes this by repeating it three times within just four verses:

• “He will bring forth justice to the nations” (v. 1b)
• “He will faithfully bring forth justice” (v. 3)
• “He will not grow faint or be discouraged till he has established justice in the earth” (v. 4)

When the just King returns, God’s desire for true justice to rule in this world will be realized. Righteousness, justice, and peace will prevail because God’s chosen Servant will be ruling.

While consistent and comprehensive, this just reign will not be harsh. In the middle of this passage, Isaiah says, “He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench” (v. 2–3a). Christ will be gentle to the oppressed, who are like “bruised reeds” requiring tender care, not jarring discipline. The oppressed are like “faintly burning wicks,” which can be extinguished if handled too roughly.

Executing true justice on an earth populated by sin-saturated people may seem a herculean task. Yet Isaiah predicts that the Messiah will be successful in accomplishing his mission. “He will not grow faint or be discouraged till he has established justice in the earth” (v. 4).

We can be encouraged because the just King won’t be discouraged, and one day—when Christ reigns on this earth—there will be justice in this world.

Discussion Question: What does it say about the nature of Jesus that He judges not only comprehensively and perfectly, but also gently? How does this give you hope and peace?
