The Light Shines in the Darkness

The Logos is light and life

“In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

(John 1:4-5)

John says that the Logos has made all things, and that life and light come from Him. We know already from the creation account in Genesis that natural light comes from God. It was the first thing He created! Even before the sun, moon and stars were created, there was light because God commanded it to be there.

All through the Bible, God is mentioned as the source of light. This is opposed to the domain of God’s enemy Satan, which is characterized by darkness. So, light is not just a natural phenomenon. It also has a spiritual meaning. We need God’s light to find true, eternal life. God’s light brings life, understanding and purity into a dark and sinful world.

Further on in the gospel of John, Jesus repeatedly claims to be the light of the world, who has come to save people from their spiritual darkness. See John 8:12 and John 12:46. Skeptical religious leaders understand that He thereby actually says that He is God Himself. They strongly condemn his claim. But the apostle John argues that Jesus is indeed the Logos, the eternal Son of God. Let’s continue reading John’s gospel to find out more and to let our hearts be enlightened by the Light of the world.
