Healthy CommunicationExemplo
Keep the Lines Open
Did you know that communication consists of more than just words? In fact, a large part of communication is nonverbal! That basically means people are affected just as much or more by our voice tone, facial expressions, and body language.
Knowing that, it’s important that both our verbal and nonverbal communication is demonstrating God’s love to others. When we listen intently, make good eye contact and speak sincerely, people know that we genuinely love them, which builds trust and helps to reinforce good friendships.
Intentionality is another huge key to communicating well. Without intentional communication, there’s no way two people can be on the same page. When it comes to everyday issues like schedules, even little efforts to touch base can make a big difference. For example, if my husband Dave is out playing golf and realizes he’ll be home an hour later than he originally planned, it’s amazing how much a quick phone call or text can prevent a future argument.
It’s also a good idea to ask others for clarification when we’re unsure of what they mean or how they feel. When we communicate instead of letting our questions and feelings go unresolved, we position ourselves and others to be in unity and genuinely understand each other.
Whether it’s a text about being home late for dinner, a compliment on your coworker’s recent project, or even setting aside time to discuss a long-standing issue with someone close to you, a few small steps can go a long way in developing a healthy relationship.
Pray: “God, please help me to show others Your love today through everything I do and say. Thank You in advance for reminding me to communicate when plans change or when I need clarification on something, and for giving me the ability to be kind in every situation. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
