The Six Foundation Teachings of ChristianityExemplo
Repentance
One of the most enduring and amazing depictions of transformation is the change we see when a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. It is a picture that has brought wonder and joy to people for countless generations. To watch as a grub can be so utterly changed and transformed into a beautiful butterfly that will take to flight is simply astounding.
This is a wonderful analogy for repentance, which is the first of the six foundation teachings of Christianity.
Repentance is about change and transformation. In fact, the Greek word from which repentance is translated means, “change your thinking,” or “change your mind.”
All human words and actions begin with a thought, whether for good or for evil. It is our thoughts that drive our words and deeds. So, if we are to change, the process must begin with the way we think. When we can control our thinking to align with the teachings of Jesus, then we can control our words, deeds, and actions.
When a person comes to Christ, they come seeking a better life, and that means change. They come seeking forgiveness and the help of the Lord to live a better life and be changed into someone different.
In Christ, we are “born anew” or “born again.” In this rebirth are the seeds of change. We are desiring to begin again and live a different life. We are appealing to God for forgiveness and transformation to change how we live.
Repentance was so important that the respective ministries of John the Baptist, Jesus, and the twelve Apostles all began by teaching the need to repent.
And repentance is not just a one-time thing. As we grow and learn the things of the Lord, we will make mistakes. The process of change can take a long time. So too, the need to repent and seek change will also take time.
Consider these questions:
- How are you changing your thinking to align with Christ?
- What do you need to sacrifice from your old life to be with Christ, now that you are born again?
A prayer point:
- Ask the Lord to help you understand repentance and the process of change required of all Christians. Ask Him to help you as you walk with Him, to reveal the changes necessary, and to give you the strength to make those changes.
