Do You Have the Keys?

“So the king sent a third captain with his fifty men. This third captain went up and fell on his knees before Elijah. ‘Man of God,’ he begged, ‘please have respect for my life and the lives of these fifty men, your servants! See, fire has fallen from heaven and consumed the first two captains and all their men. But now have respect for my life!’ The angel of the Lord said to Elijah, ‘Go down with him; do not be afraid of him.’ So Elijah got up and went down with him to the king” (2 Kings 1:13-15).

The prophet Elijah had called fire down from heaven twice and already consumed two captains and 100 men sent by the king. It seems a bit ironic that the angel has to tell Elijah not to be afraid of the third captain who is begging Elijah to spare his life.

What did Elijah possibly have to fear? The same God who was protecting Elijah is the very same God protecting you so what do you have to fear? Your heavenly Father has not left you defenseless. Quite the contrary; He left us with His word and it can be a consuming fire or a hammer. “Is not my word like fire," declares the LORD, "and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?” (Jeremiah 23:29)

What can God’s word do for you? Solomon tells us, “My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart; for they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh” (Proverbs 4:20-22). God’s word is life to those who find it. Many explorers have searched for a mythical fountain of youth. Little did they know that God’s word was much more sustaining and everlasting.

Do you feel powerless some days? Why not add God’s word to your daily diet? The writer of Hebrews tells us, “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword” (Hebrews 4:12). Commit God’s word to memory and you can move mountains.

Jesus said, “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 16:19). These keys are not meant to be a mystery; they are all written in His word. And when you have the keys, you can live life fearlessly!

Prayer: Lord, thank You for the keys that unlock the mysteries of life. May I never lose them and always try to use them. If I somehow get locked out, I know You’ll take the call and let me back in the door. Thank You for Your grace, mercy and love. In Jesus' name, amen.
