Room With A Bad View

It didn't take David long to get into trouble by not being where he was supposed to be. By verse 2, David is already on thin ice, eyeing Bathsheba across the street. David didn't stop at verse 2, however, and by verse 3, he's now acting on that distraction and temptation. If you go on to read all of chapter 11, you'll see David trying to cover his sin by committing more evil, even murder.

David ultimately pays for this by the death of his son at the hands of God as punishment.

I know what you are thinking, "Sure, David lusted, lied, and murdered, but I don't do those things."

Lust - Matthew 5:28

Lies - Proverbs 19:9

Murder - 1 John 3:15

As with many stories in the Bible, we can learn much from this story of David. We see that David should go to war just as other kings do every spring. We can see what happens when we are in the wrong place at the wrong time. God has a plan for each of our lives, and we mustn't get distracted from that calling.

But we may not know where we are supposed to be if we are not spending time with God. We communicate with God by reading his Word, praying for wisdom and discernment, as well as counseling with the Holy Spirit.

If David had prayed to God and asked if he should go out to war or stay home, God would have told him to start packing his bags. He would have also told him to keep his eyes to himself on the way out.

Uncommen Questions:

Have you ever been in the wrong place at the wrong time? How did that make you feel?

Are you in the right place with God?

Uncommen Challenge:

I challenge you and me to examine where we are in our lives compared to where God calls us to be. Are you about to have a David & Bathsheba moment?

Bonus: In Chapter 12, Nathan calls David out on those actions. It's a beautiful story of truth and grace, and I highly recommend it.
