A Righteous Ruler
It was common for a ruler to oppress his people or to take some of their possessions for himself. Not so with Samuel. When he resigns as Israel’s leader, he calls the LORD as his witness that he has never taken anything from anybody and has never taken a bribe. On the contrary, he has ruled Israel according to God’s prescriptions for judges and officers. For example: “You shall not pervert justice. You shall not show partiality, and you shall not accept a bribe … Justice, and only justice, you shall follow” (Deuteronomy 16:18-20, ESV).
These prescriptions for judges reflect God’s own rule. Moses sings about it in Deuteronomy 32:4 (ESV) - “The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he.”
The people of Israel prospered under Samuel’s rule. Whoever accepts the Lord as his King, will prosper on his new earth in which righteousness dwells. Is this your destination?
