Study: The Humility of The Habit

Charles Spurgeon said, “As well might a gnat seek to drink in the ocean, as a finite creature to comprehend the Eternal God.” We will never understand or completely grasp all of scripture. Which makes this a humbling endeavor. But humility can actually increase our appetite to grow in our habit of study. Because, the more you know, the more you realize you don’t know, and the more you see the need to grow

In Job 38:3-4 God speaks to Job and says, “Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundations?”

Harsh? Uncaring? Hardly! It is humbling. And there is actually great comfort in humility. This whole thing does not rest on you. God is in control. And God sees all and is working it all together for GOOD. Humility leads us to understand that we have no answers for God, but he has answers for us.

In Exodus, God led the nation of Israel by a cloud during the day and a pillar of fire at night. He illuminated their path through his light. In Psalm 119:105-112, we also read of the Word of God as a light. God is illuminating our steps so that we don’t get lost or lose our footing in the darkness. The Psalmist acknowledges that God’s Word is a light, but ALSO makes the commitment to follow the light.

There is humility in acknowledging that your life should follow God’s light.

There is only One who can give orders to the morning. And it is not you or me. In scripture we meet our God, the Creator and Sustainer of it all.

So how are we to proceed in this world? One step at a time, letting the Word of the God be a lamp for our feet, and a light on our paths. Humbly trusting that God is with us, every step of the way.

  • In what area of your life are you trying to give answers to God, instead, of searching for answers from God?
  • In what area of your life have your strayed from God’s guiding light?

Consider the gift of humility as you read Job 38:1-21 and Psalm 119:105-112.
