Około czwartej nad ranem Jezus przyszedł do nich. Szedł po falach. Gdy uczniowie zobaczyli Go idącego po wodzie, przestraszyli się. Myśleli, że to zjawa. Ze strachu nawet krzyknęli. Lecz Jezus zaraz ich uspokoił: Odwagi — przemówił — to Ja jestem, nie bójcie się! Wtedy odezwał się Piotr: Panie, jeśli to Ty jesteś, każ mi przyjść do siebie po wodzie. Przyjdź — polecił. I Piotr wyszedł z łodzi, szedł po wodzie i zbliżył się do Jezusa. Jednak potężny wiatr przestraszył go i gdy zaczął tonąć, zawołał: Panie, ratuj mnie!
