Postawili zatem przed nim posiłek, a on go spożył. Jego postępowanie nie dawało jednak sługom spokoju: Dlaczego zachowujesz się w ten sposób? Póki dziecko żyło, pościłeś i płakałeś, a gdy umarło, podniosłeś się z ziemi i zacząłeś jeść. Dawid odpowiedział: Dopóki dziecko żyło, pościłem i płakałem, bo myślałem sobie: Kto wie? Może PAN zmiłuje się nade mną i dziecko nie umrze? Lecz ono umarło. Dlaczego mam pościć? Czy jestem w stanie przywrócić mu życie? To ja pójdę do niego. Ono nie wróci do mnie.
