FCA: The Relentless Devotional For CompetitorsSample
King of the Hill
Jimmy Page (adapted from WisdomWalks Sports)
READY:
“His divine power has given us everything required for life and godliness… [so we] may share in the divine nature, escaping the corruption that is in the world because of evil desires.” – 2 Peter 1:3-4
SET:
In the game of baseball, New York Yankees pitcher Mariano Rivera is the King of the Hill. He’s the sport’s all-time greatest closer with over 600 saves. When Mariano stands on the pitcher’s mound, he is a picture of power. Having the power to perform well in sports is one thing. Having power for life is something else entirely. In life we have three opponents – the lies of the devil, the lure of our flesh and the love of the world. (1 John 2:15-17) And through Christ, we have power to conquer them all.
We have power over the devil. Our enemy is not to be taken lightly. He “prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8) He tempts, but God gives us power to resist. (James 4:7)
We have power over our flesh. We all face temptations. Our flesh wants what it wants when it wants it. We often think we can do it on our own, but only He gives us the power to stand or flee! (1 Corinthians 10:13)
We have power over the world. The enemy appeals to our sense of pride. We brag about our victories and take credit when things go right. But, it’s God alone Who deserves the glory. (Revelations 4:11)
God is the ultimate King of the Hill. And in order to live a life of power, we must depend on Him to shut down our enemies.
GO:
- Do you experience power over temptation or do you easily give in?
- How can you set your heart and mind on things above?
WORKOUT:
Colossians 3:1-5
2 Corinthians 10:4
OVERTIME:
Father, give me the power to overcome the lies of the devil, the lure of my flesh and the love of the things of this world. Amen.
