Deep Community: Loving & Thriving in Your Local Churchਨਮੂਨਾ

Sharpening in Community
In deep community, we don’t just find comfort; we find growth. Proverbs 27:17 reminds us that iron sharpens iron, and in the same way, we sharpen one another.
It’s through open dialogue, differing perspectives, and even constructive criticism that we become wiser, more mature, and more like Christ. This process isn’t always easy, but it’s essential for our personal and spiritual growth.
Sometimes, people rub us the wrong way. Maybe they have a different opinion, a different way of doing things, or they just don't fit our expectations. But instead of putting up walls and distancing ourselves, we can choose to see these moments as opportunities for growth. We can allow these experiences to build our patience, kindness, and understanding. These challenges are not meant to break us; they are meant to refine us.
What about the times when someone comes to us and points out an area we need to grow in? Let's face it, constructive criticism isn’t always easy to hear. But when we allow ourselves to be teachable, even in those uncomfortable moments, we grow. God might be speaking through someone else, challenging us to reflect, repent, and change.
Have you been offended by someone or felt rubbed the wrong way by a comment or action? If you’re honest, you’ve probably experienced this at some point. It’s part of life. But the key is not to let those offences or frustrations fester. Instead, we can go to God and ask, “Why did this bother me? What can I learn from this?” When we confront our feelings, we open the door for growth.
We need one another to challenge, sharpen, and strengthen us. When we allow ourselves to be open to growth, through both the good and the difficult aspects of the community, we become better people. This growth in character and maturity is not just for our benefit but for the mission God has called us to: to love others and to bring His Kingdom to earth.
Reflect:
- What opportunities for growth can you see in your own life, even if through difficult conversations or moments of tension?
- Who has God put in your life to sharpen and refine you? Do you need to change how you see the reason that person is in your life?
