Forty Days in the Psalms

DAY 33 OF 40

I (Josh) am a recovering Do It Yourselfer. Now I'm not talking about the Chip and Joanna Gaines type of DIY'ers who can turn an old pallet into a beautiful coffee table. I'm talking about the kind of person who never asks for help. From trying to move a heavy couch to navigating my feelings, I try to do it all myself!

Americans take pride in our self-sufficient, "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" way of living. Although some DIY grit is good, it also has a dark side. We tend to shut people out of our lives; we struggle to trust others for help. And if we're not careful, we can take this attitude into our relationship with God.

We believe the lie that we can handle the small stuff and that we only need God's help for the big stuff. So, we spend our days trying to handle the 90% and only go to God with the really scary stuff. David shows us in Psalm 33 what it means to trust God with every part of our lives. Verses 14-15 say, "...from where he sits enthroned, he looks out on all the inhabitants of the earth, he who fashions the hearts of them all and observes all their deeds."

God sees it all. He knows everything about our lives and wants us to bring our needs before Him. First Peter 5:7 says it this way, "cast all your cares upon him because he cares for you." Which cares did He tell us to bring to Him? Not just the big ones but all of them. As we look towards Easter, let us remember we have a Savior who has opened the door to God's Presence, and the door is always open.

RESPOND IN PRAYER:

Do you find it hard to go to God for small needs? Why do you think this is? Trusting God in your everyday needs will deepen your relationship with Him. You will start to see Him as a Constant Friend rather than an emergency responder. Here are a few ways you might put this into practice today.

· Take 30 seconds to pray for wisdom before you walk into a meeting.

· Pray for peace as you start your commute home in rush hour traffic.

· Pray over your child as they head out the door to catch the school bus.

· Pray for direction as you submit that resume for a new job.
