The Sermon on the Mountਨਮੂਨਾ

The Sermon on the Mount

DAY 3 OF 6

A Life of Contrast, Part 1

The Sermon on the Mount stands out, not only for its purpose, but also for its methodology. Jesus accomplishes His goal of describing life under His reign by drawing vivid contrasts between the values of the Kingdom of God and those of the world. This theme of contrast runs through the entire sermon, shaping every instruction and command.

Theologian John Stott captured this beautifully when he said, “The sermon describes what human life and human community look like when they come under the gracious rule of God. And what do they look like? Different.” Jesus calls His followers to be entirely distinct, not patterned after the norms of society but reflecting the heart of their heavenly Father. This is summarized in Matthew 6:8, where Jesus says, “Do not be like them.” These contrasts reveal the unique identity of Kingdom citizens.

For instance, the Beatitudes in Matthew 5:3–12 portray a character unlike anything admired by the world. Humility, mercy, and purity of heart define those who belong to Christ’s Kingdom. Our influence, too, is different. As salt and light, we are called to preserve what is good and illuminate truth in a world marked by decay and darkness. But this difference extends beyond behavior. Jesus calls us to a righteousness that exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, one rooted in the heart rather than external compliance.

As Jesus teaches, the contrasts become sharper. Kingdom love goes beyond loving friends; it includes praying for enemies. Kingdom prayers are not filled with empty phrases to impress others; they are honest, heartfelt cries to a Father who knows our needs. Even our view of material things and security reflects this contrast. While the world seeks refuge in possessions, Jesus calls us to trust God as our provider and to seek first His Kingdom and righteousness.

This sermon challenges us to consider whether our lives reflect the values of Christ’s Kingdom. Are we distinct in our love, our prayers, and our priorities? Does our character reflect humility and grace, or are we merely conforming to the world around us? Pray today for God to help you live as a true Kingdom citizen, shaped by His truth and empowered by His Spirit.
