Divine Timing: Leading With Purpose

DAY 2 OF 14

Holding People Accountable

Holding people accountable is a crucial aspect of leadership that is reflected in both practical strategies and biblical wisdom. I want to introduce to you the Five A Approach to Accountability to help us as leaders foster growth, improve team performance, and build trust.

Affirmation: Begin by recognizing the individual’s strengths to set a positive tone for improvement. "Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing." 1 Thessalonians 5:11

Action to Be Improved: Address one specific area for improvement with clear examples to provide focus. "Whoever heeds life-giving correction will be at home among the wise." Proverbs 15:31

Alignment: Ensure mutual understanding of the need for improvement and the steps required to achieve it. "Can two walk together, except they be agreed?" Amos 3:3

Accountability: Set timelines, expectations, and consequences for performance improvement, such as a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP). "Each of us will give an account of ourselves to God." Romans 14:12

Agreement: Finalize with a signed agreement to emphasize commitment and the significance of the plan. "But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’" Matthew 5:37

This structured approach enables leaders to hold others accountable with clarity, empathy, and consistency, driving better outcomes.

Through biblical wisdom and practical strategies, 2025 should become a year where we aspire to become equipped as leaders to embrace accountability.
