Calvary gave us Peace

Rest in Peace is a phrase that most of us are very familiar with hearing when someone dies or when it is spoken at a funeral.

Rest in Peace, or in Latin Requiescat in Pace, has been translated as “a wish” to the soul of the decedent to rest in peace. As believers, I think that we should challenge the notion that we need someone “to wish” that our souls can only rest in peace after we are dead.

Rest has been a foundational principle since God showed us how he rested in Genesis 2 after the creation of everything. In addition to that, Jesus affirms that we too can have rest while still living in Matthew 11, when he said, “Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” The word rest implies there is still more to be done. The dead have finished their race. We haven’t.

Jesus made good on that promise when he went to the cross on Calvary and defeated the last enemy - death. Therefore, since we have been justified by his faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Christ Jesus. Simply said, we don’t have to wait to rest in peace. Jesus said, “My peace, I leave with you”. Because of Calvary, we can Rest in Peace with God daily. Thank you, Lord Jesus, for making peace always available to us by your sacrifice.

Dear Lord, you are our Peace. Please show us how to receive the rest in peace that you provided for us on the cross at Calvary. In Jesus name, amen.
