Friendship vs. Dating: What Does the Bible Say About Relationship Beginnings?

DAY 5 OF 5

Day 5: Continuing the Friendship

It’s true that the strongest relationships often start as great friendships. This isn’t just a coincidence; it’s a beautiful truth echoed throughout the Bible. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 tells us, "Two are better than one... If either of them falls down, one can help the other up." This verse highlights the strength found in companionship, a foundation that remains essential even as friendship blossoms into a romantic relationship.

When you transition from friends to a couple, it’s easy to get swept up in the romance and forget the friendship that brought you together. But keeping that friendship alive is key to a lasting relationship. After all, the best marriages are those where partners see each other as their closest friends. So, how do you maintain and build this friendship while dating?

First, keep the lines of communication open. Just like you did as friends, talk about everything—your hopes, fears, dreams, and even the trivial day-to-day stuff. This openness helps both of you feel valued and understood, keeping the connection strong.

Another way to nurture your friendship is to continue sharing activities that you both enjoy. Whether it’s hiking, cooking together, or simply watching a favorite TV show, these experiences are small but meaningful. They remind you of the fun and joy that friendship brings.

Don't forget to support each other in personal growth. Encourage one another to pursue individual passions and goals. This not only strengthens your friendship but also enriches your relationship by bringing fresh perspectives and experiences into it. Celebrate each other’s achievements and be a source of comfort during challenges.

Also, laughter remains a powerful friendship builder. Don’t lose sight of the playful side of your relationship. Be silly together, share jokes, and enjoy light-hearted moments. Laughter can break the tension and bring you closer, reminding you of why you enjoyed each other’s company in the first place.

Lastly, pray together. Sharing your spiritual journey can deepen both your friendship and your romantic relationship. Asking for guidance and wisdom in your relationship shows a commitment to keeping God at the center, making sure you’re spiritually and emotionally connected.

By focusing on these aspects, you continue to build the friendship that will sustain your relationship. Remember, the romance is enhanced by a friendship that grows alongside it, offering a firm foundation for whatever life brings your way.
