Choose Forgiveness

In this verse, Paul encourages believers to be kind and compassionate to each other and forgive each other as Christ has forgiven them. If we are being honest, it is not the easiest thing to do, especially when it comes to forgiveness. Many things have happened in our lives, and it can be hard to choose forgiveness because of the hurt we have experienced through someone else’s actions. I grew up in a destructive household; my mother not only used drugs but sold them. Over the years, I held onto hate and decided that I did not want to forgive my mother for the things that had happened.

At times, we do not want to forgive because we feel that if we forgive, it is as if we are saying it was ok, excusing what has happened to us, and giving that person a free pass. I found that is not true, and that is not the reality; forgiveness is not for the other person but for ourselves. It declares that we will no longer allow this to dictate how we feel or enable it to control our lives.

Christ has forgiven us for all we have done, so we must also forgive others. Once you do, a weight will be lifted, and you will experience a peace that surpasses all understanding.
