The Bible OverBrew - Bible in a Year

DAY 1 OF 365

Week 1. Day 1. Gen 1-4.

Introduction to The Bible OverBrew

Welcome to the Bible OverBrew, a friendly virtual book group, helping you get an overview of the whole Bible story. The plan is divided into 52 weeks, with each week laid out as follows

  • Days 1-5. The scripture reading for the week, with notes and questions to guide you. These notes are found in the 'devotion' tab.
  • Day 6. Just the 'key chapters' from the week's reading. You may use these in addition to the readings on days 1-5 so you cover the most important bits twice. Or, if you want a more abbreviated form of this programme that still takes you through the whole Bible, you could do these key chapters instead of the readings on days 1-5, and still be up to speed for the podcast episode for each week.
  • Day 7. Podcast episode where we discuss the reading from the week just gone, drawing out key themes and seeking to see how it encourages us in Christ. Huge thanks to Good News Broadcasting Association who made the recording of these episodes possible.

So you may wish to do all the reading, or you may wish just to do the key chapters, or you may mix and match week by week. However you use this plan, our prayer is that you gain a better understanding of God's one big story, the story of his grace and salvation in Jesus Christ!

Introduction to Genesis

It is hard to overstate the importance of Genesis for understanding the Bible as a whole, in particular:

  • creation (ch 1-2),
  • sin (ch3)
  • God’s promises to Abraham (ch 12, 15 and 17).

Themes and ideas from these chapters will continue to recur throughout the Bible story. God’s salvation plan in Christ is not some ‘plan B’ – rather it is the fulfilment of his original good creation purposes.

Gen 1-2 Creation

What seem to be the major emphases about creation in these chapters?

The negative command ‘do not eat’ is perhaps better known than the positive commands given to Adam in Gen 1-2.

●What are the positive commands?

●Keep an eye out for these being repeated in the rest of Genesis / the Bible

Gen 3 The Fall

What is the result of sin for Adam and Eve?

Gen 3:15 (part of God’s curse on the serpent) is a key promise:

And I will put enmity
between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and hers;
he will crush your head,
and you will strike his heel.” (Gen 3:14-15 NIV)

The serpent (representing Satan) will attack God’s people, but one offspring will come who will crush Satan forever.

NOTE: Days 1-5 of each week contain the scripture reading for that week. Day 6 has just the 'key chapters'. If you want a briefer version of this plan that still takes you through the whole Bible, you could just read the key chapters featured on day 6. Day 7 has the podcast video where we discuss the week's reading.

Day 2

About this Plan

The Bible OverBrew - Bible in a Year

The Bible OverBrew is a friendly virtual book group, helping you read the Bible in big chunks, preferably with a mug of tea! Maybe you've tried to read through the Bible before, but gave up when it felt confusing or too intense? We are here to help you! We provide notes and questions to guide your reading, and note ‘key chapters’ if you don’t have time to read it all. In our podcast at the end of each week we draw out the key themes, and how it all points to Christ. We’d love you to join us!
