Daily Hope for the Empty Nest

DAY 7 OF 10

Anxiety

Anxiety is defined as a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome. As we adjust to life in the empty nest season, feelings of anxiety can become a regular part of our daily routine. Our schedule of daily events and activities has changed significantly, giving us empty moments and head space for nervous feelings to take root.

Since we don’t have our kids around every day, our feelings of concern for them can sometimes become overwhelming. We wonder if they are eating well or getting enough sleep. If they are in college, are they studying and making it to class every day? We wonder if they are making new friends, and whether those new friends are a good (or bad) influence on them.

In today’s scripture, we can find comfort in the words from 1 Peter and in the promise that comes through God’s mighty hand lifting us up if we are willing to humble ourselves before Him. Our anxiety is eased by our heavenly Father who cares for us (and our children). We can let go of our anxiety and give all of our cares to Him.

Prayer

Dear God, please remind me You are in control of all things. When I feel anxious and afraid, help me to remember that I can turn to You to find comfort and peace. Amen.

Exercise

Spend one minute every hour taking deep breaths when you notice feelings of anxiety emerging.
